Is ICT Manager worth it?

JonnyKennedy

Hello guys,

I am almost finished my high school (translated to US school system) and I must make a choose what I want for me in the future.

When I was a boy I'm installed Windows XP when I was 8 years (I think).

I was an active gamer and now to!.

This year and month (I hope) I go build my own PC.

I like computer stuff.

Is ICT manager different than building PC, installing OS?

Who is working in the ICT specialization or ICT Manager?

I must apply it so fast as possible.

I hope you replay so fast as possible!

I answer also fast as possible.

I work for an IT company, very little building PCs, more based around networking and servers, installing OS not so much, software maybe depending on company, though unlikely

Server hosting with programs like VMware or Hyperx?

Yes.

I tried it btw, 2 months and I quit.

You need to be behind your laptop all day, wasn't for me.

IT management is determining and controlling all the IT needs of a business. There is a lot of planning involved and management. You will not become a manager for many years. The IT field is pretty broad and experience is key.

Depends on the company, possibly but more actual server administration and the like

I work at a college.

We don't buy ready built hardware in (aside from laptops) - we build PCs. Everything is replaced on a 5 year cycle, so every 2nd or 3rd month, we order in all the components required to replace a suite of machines.

Networking infrastructure is managed by ourselves, as is software. Windows images are prepared on a machine with relevant hardware, it is uploaded to our image server and then the process is repeated for each different suite of PCs, depending on where they are located. Means instead of doing a typical install which takes 5 hours inclusive of updates, we can image a room in 30 minutes.

Some organisations buy pre-built hardware with software loaded on already - this would be boring for me. I enjoy how our IT is run, the manager is fairly hands on as well. It is important when you go for an interview to ask specific questions regarding who looks after what. If everything is outsourced, you are strictly a middle man which is boring. I wouldn't personally want to be an IT manager, I get my enjoyment from playing with the hardware itself, rather than delegating to a team.

IT is a fun profession, but prepare to do a few different roles in different environments before you find something which feels "right" for you.

I can choose between ICT manager, applicationdeveloper and network manager. I can choose one of them and after a half year I can choose a specification of this three education.

Thank you for interesting this post!

Edit:

I'm installing Windows server 2008 R2 on VMware Workstation

/Edit 2: year => half year

I would go with learning more about Networks personally because specialising will mean there will be no shortage of opportunities, there are too many variations for IT manager
