In the next few months my main gaming pc will get the mega upgrade which means I'll have some spare parts. I'm for some reason emotionally attached to the AMD Phenom II x6 1090T and unlike my 2600k I'm not willing to sell off this relic of the past. So I'm thinking about making a pc based on the 1090T for video/image editing or computer modeling. More than likely the PC will be on for much longer than a regular pc.

What I need suggestions on: PSU, Case, and GPU* (and maybe cooling if you have any other better ideas.

Case wise: I would like to have small-ish case so I can just store it away. Though I heard great things about the R5 for being very silent.

PSU wise: I'm sure what to get as generally I just pick a Corsair PSU and call it a day. But the be quiet brand seems like quiet psu (as they advertise, but I never hear my psu's fan before.)

GPU wise(AMD only, No Nvidia): I'm not sure.... I thought about getting a cheap Firepro card but if that is the case which one? Or just get a consumer card.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/VFyWwP

* I want to reuse my GTX 580 3GB but not sure if that thing is still relevant now-a-days.

---------------

Note:

- Heat and Power is consideration but not enough to choose another brand entirely. (For the GPU)

- CPU must be the Phenom II x6. (Also I'm not fully sold on the FX cpus. And upgrading to a i5 at the lowest is +188 and i7 is +299.) But might change to another cpu if the price is good enough.

- I might not use the ram listed above as I already have ram. Sadly it's Intel branded ram and I used it on an AMD machine before. (DISGRACE!)

- I could careless or care nothing at all about the colors inside. I can have a total rainbow of colored parts.

- I'm trying to keep it cheap as possible.

- 1080p

- 1 monitor

- USD

I mean, why do you have an PCI ethernet card when the onboard has the exact same specified speeds?

What is your total budget, what currency, where are you located, and what do you currently have?

It's kind of hard to do anything without knowing all of these. Your current plans seem subpar because you're still investing in old tech that is outclassed these days.

Wait a minute. You mean... You didn't even check price/performance did you? Cheaper ram plz... the samsung SSD, with 3D dimms it's getting so much cheaper, you can get 250BG for that price. Get a bequiet or a noctua CPU heatsink instead of that AIO.

I guess you wan't to use the 10kRPM HDD as a scratchdisk right?

Yes, you can use the GTX580, its still a beast (probably like the 960 lol).

Planning on trying StarCitizen (Highly recommended)? STAR-NR5P-CJFR is my referal link

Why do you have a network card when there's already one on the motherboard?

I really wouldn't worry too much about having an outdated graphics card, you already have an outdated CPU.

I currently have:

1090t

Intel branded DDR3 ram from Patriot

H80

Corsair 750W PSU (Not sure if I should use.)

Samsung SSD

-----

Other stuff I have:

2600k

2x 580

2x Radeon 6870

4x 4gb Kingston RAM

My post said USD.

But I'm willing to change the cpu if there is great reason to do so.

Yeah the 10k is for that. While the 1 Tb is for the other junk. (I might add another 1TB for the upload and download stuff as I'll use my home network to transfer files.)

Well for the RAM I might not even use that as I kinda have ram sticks..... (I just wanted to have AMD branded ram sticks, just like how I have Intel branded sticks.)

Well it's more of is my absolutely outdated 580 and 1090T even worth it now a days?

Also GPU. Because would a low end firepro card beat out a 580 or would a cheap consumer card beat out the 580.

The best way to find out is start using the CPU and GPU you already have.  If you find you need more performance, then start researching parts based on a set budget (if you have one).

Well, I guess, the $100 on the mobo would go to waste... so I would start researching rendering times and multithreaded performance of the CPU, and how it compares to current alternatives.

One thing I can say is, the FX line is not a good upgrade at all.  If you are looking at better CPU's. go intel... Xeon ($260) as a matter of fact.

I didn't want to buy the Nzxt G10 kit just to test out a very old GPU. (Old watercooling accident killed the waterblocks on the 580s)

My budget is to be about sub 1500 USD. (For the system and try to reuse older parts that will be tossed off a few months later. The 850 is not old though but it's only 128gb.)

How heavy is the workload for this station?  It is the question I am really getting at.

@Icywolfe  For $1500, we can help you build an entire workstation... a pretty nice one.  ^_^

Not that heavy.(but not light) I don't do it as job, but still enough well until..... my 580 system broke..... (watercooling accident) For the video editing part I sometimes ran my system overnight as exporting the file took forever. (it seems.)

Is this too much for the workspace?  Would a regular 16:9 be enough?

Just looking at this:  http://www.cpu-world.com/benchmarks/AMD/Phenom_II_X6_1090T.html

Based on the numbers here, I would say keep using the 1090t for now.  This is not a job for you, you make your own deadlines.  Unless you sit and stare at your render (OCD), the cost to upgrade would be a bit steep:  at least $350.

Is that i5 4440 the same thing as the Xeon e3 1220v3?

It's about 40% slower than the previous latest and greatest from intel. Hmmm, I might be rethinking the cpu.

Yeah, the i5 hits a wall at only 4 cores where the X6 has 6 true cores... even at twice the IPC it only keeps up with the Phenom.

I thought you might want the change so this is starting to look more like a workstation:

I look at the firepros but I really don't have the practical experience to give you an informed recomendation.  The Xeon should yield 30-40% more performance when rendering... but I would want more hard numbers before buying if it was me.

I only looked at Xeons (And once the Opterons, bad idea for opterons) because of then I can reliably run my system overnight if need be.

The information for Firepros on the web is very lacking =/

But is the Xeon cool enough that I can use the stock heatsink?

Yes, definitely.  You have the H80, it would be good to use if you have it.  I believe a FSB (BCLK) overclock is possible with these Xeons so you do have that option if you need the speed.  The next step up is the 2011-3 socket.

It's the thing of normally I would throw away stock heat sinks once I opened up the package.

Firepro wise I only saw the v5900(Even though there is alot of crashes due to that card.) being the greatest card for Sony Vegas for the price, while the w7000 is the most stable.

I might go with the xeon. Just the GPU is bugging me. Consumer gpu or workstation gpu.

I know professionals that go consumer grade because of the FirePro costs, they are sometimes not worth it... especially if it is a dual purpose machine (gaming).  For budget off the top of my head, I am thinking dual 290s?  ...under $500.  Or just one would do...$250.  290X's are under $300.

I did that for long while. Often that meant my computer is on 24/7 and near max load for that time. During the day I'm gaming and then overnight it's exporting the file and during the morning it's uploading the file to the clan server. (Stuff like thing happens when your gaming clan mates or friends has no idea how to even join file... I do get semi paid.)

Many of the posts on the Vegas forum also recommend the radeon 7970s but those are pretty old posts. Seems like nobody recommends Nvidia cards though.

R9 280 = 7970s? If so I might go for that, as that is about 100 USD cheaper than v5900. and about 400 USD cheaper than the w7000.

R9280 is the 7950

R9280X is the 7970

R9290 is a new design (hawaii, I believe)

R9285 is a new design (hawaii, renamed tonga... I think)

Nvidia is great, but a 970 is over $300, and 980...well.
