Hello,

My friend wants a video editing rig.
However, I don't know much about the system requirements.
I have an Asus M5A97 R2.0 lying around so I figured an AMD setup wouldn't be too bad.
Budget $1000 (@ canadacomputers)
Now here are my questions.

  1. AMD FX series still viable in 2015?
  2. GPU impact. Gtx 960/r9 285 over kill or too weak?
  3. RAM. I hear that Video editing benefits from more.

Things to note:
I live in Canada, so miraculous American prices do not apply. e.g. the 960 is closer to $300 here and 970 $400-$500...

I would like to save as much money as possible.

I assume he will use Sony Vegas and Adobe premier.
He REALLY wants a water cooler for some reason.

What I have in mind.

Thank you.

1. For video editing it's pretty good, but I'd still recommend the Xeon E3 1231 v3 over the 8350 (it's basically a locked i7 with no iGPU). Though since you already have the motherboard and it's only for video editing, the 8350 should be just fine.

2. Not sure how video editing takes advantage of GPU's

3. Some people say 16GB is great, others want 32GB. I'd recommend starting at 16GB.

The V300 is a relatively horrible SSD. Get a MX100/SP900/840 Evo instead, ~15% more expensive for 200-300% more performance.

RIP in pepperonis m8s

What's wrong with the Kingston V300? Any good reads on SSD technology?

Is bumping GPU down to 750 or 270 valid?

@JRuss16 Will get 16bg of RAM.

@SuperPug I've tried and failed.

Any ssd is going to be much faster than hdd. The issue with the V300 has to do with Kingston sending out reviewer samples then shipping units with slower parts to consumers. There is nothing inherently wrong with the model.

A GTX 750 will provide some acceleration. But a better gpu will go a ways to reducing render times.

Presumably your friend is aware that the cpu cooler will have to be replaced in a few years?

The H100i is not compatible with the 300R. If it has to be a liquid cooler consider the H60.

Canada Computers will price match.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
