I start my freshman year of college this fall, and I have been looking at laptops for a few months now. I had originally planned on following my interests in linux and purchasing a System76 laptop. However, with the news of Windows 10 being free for 7-8.1 users, and the reveal of the new Dell XPS 13 I decided to go with the Dell. The day of purchasing is getting closer and closer, but the mircrosoft store has still not stocked the Core i5, 256gb ssd, and 8gb touchscreen model yet. [i cant afford it without my student discount from the microsoft store]. Should I just keep waiting? Or should I find an alternative solution? I wanted to buy the laptop with time to adjust to using it, and to make sure it didn't have any big problems. I was also hoping to get other peoples opinions on my choice. Sorry for the icky formatting and the bit of ramble, thanks in advance.

Other laptops that interest me: If you have any suggestions, i'm willing to hear them. My budget is $1100 USD or lower.

Wait until June/July. We'll likely have Surface 4 and other laptops out by then that are better and/or todays models will be cheaper. Unless you need a laptop today wait until summer.

I'd say either the System76 or Dell XPS option and basically that's because they hae a little more to offer, I mean if you need more power you might be better going for the MSI option but really the XPS or Gazelle should be good/sufficient.

The surface is interesting, but I really want a clamshell laptop. My main problem is money, I may have the money now but that may not always be the case with how tight things have been lately. I haven't heard much about future 2015 Broadwell laptops, got any links?

Pcper does a lot of Broadwell reporting. Other than that I don't know.
