So I was attempting to move 50GB of data from an older laptop to a flash drive.  Estimated 108 hours.  Removed HDD and placed it into my reader and moved it in about 15 minutes...

Intel Core I7-4790K 4.5GHz 1.225V, NZXT Kraken x60 AIO Cooler, EVGA Z97 FTW Board, Kingston Fury 2x8GB DDR3 1600Mhz Ram, EVGA GTX 980 TI SC+ ACX GPU, Corsair Air 540 Case w/ 3x120MM & 3x140MM Cougar Red LED Fans, EVGA G1 650W 80+ Gold PSU, Crucial MX100 512GB SSD, Samsung UD590 4k 60Hz Monitor

Until you copy large files and it overheats.

For serious I was just looking at the reviews, I know nothing.

50GB is a lot of stuff to move. I'd break it up a bit, at least that's what I would do.

"Normandy" i7 4790K - GTX 970 - Phantom 410 (Gun metal) - Z97 Extreme4 (asrock) - 128GB Crucial SSD - 1TB WD HDD - H60 Refurb. - 7 case fans | G710+ Keyboard, G230 Headset, Acer GN246HL Monitor.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

Hey Snaeb_aka_Beans,

What laptop (and drive inside) and flash drive are you using? It may be the slow USB connection or the thumb drive itself that is bottlenecking the process. Moving large amount of smaller files can easily clog the buffer and this reducing the transfer speed.

I figure that might be the issue.  It's a vista machine so it's probably USB 2.0 at best.  But using my external reader I moved it to my SSD in minutes

So, you got your SSD connected via a docking station to the laptop, or you got the laptop's drive in an enclosure/docking station and connected it to your other computer?

Either way, the cache on the two drives contributes a lot when it comes to transferring many small files compared to a thumb drive.
