Odd temperature spikes

Go to solution Solved by gibbsy81,

Will do, I have ran it before and I am certain the temperatures never hit above 50 but I will get back to you with the results.

Run it for like 1 hour so then it should set the compound it worked for me my temps were 40 now there down to 20.

So I recently replaced my terrible motherboard with the MSI 990XA-GD55 and its great I love it to bits. But however I have noticed something odd, it might just be my fault however I would like someone elses opinion. My temperatures seem perfectly normal for 4.2GHz, sits at 40 degrees but every so often my temperature spikes to around 45 and on rare occasion 50 degrees.

I am using the H80i cooler with MX-4 cooling paste, I have already used the preapplied thermal paste that came on the cooling block so I can no longer use that paste. I'm 100% certain I didn't apply too much as I made sure it was pea sized.

It never really spikes when I am playing games just when I am sitting at desktop or in browser. The voltages I am running at is 1.3v and completely stable.

System Specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X

GPU: Radeon RX 7900 XT

RAM: 32GB 3600MHz

HDD: 1TB Sabrent NVMe -  WD 1TB Black - WD 2TB Green -  WD 4TB Blue

MB: Gigabyte  B550 Gaming X- RGB Disabled

PSU: Corsair RM850x 80 Plus Gold

Case: BeQuiet! Silent Base 801 Black

Cooler: Noctua NH-DH15

are these temps at idle or load.

Idle, at load the maximum temperature I get is 50 (playing BF3 at max settings). I have yet to see my CPU hit 60 degrees. On my old motherboard I never had it randomly spike to 50 degrees for no reason.

Hmm perhaps, guess I'm not used to having such a high end motherboard (high end to me). This mobo has all these features that I've never had on previous motherboards, I feel like a kid in a candy shop haha.

Run prime 95 the thermal compound may not have cured you should run it on large fft.

if you are getting top end temps of 50 C you are just fine in Prime 95 that is a good temp to be at. You could have a top end of just under 80 even and be amazing.

Okay so I ran prime95 for about 30 minutes. The temperatures are already much much better. Not jumping around all over the place, currently sitting at 38 degrees. The temperature spikes are still there but its only when the voltage goes up but the temperature spike only lasts for a millisecond at the most, then goes back down to 38 degrees. Extremely pleased with this board, its great and anyone thinking of buying one should totally do it!

Thanks for the help guys.
