780Ti vs 980

I'm looking to get a new GPU for my build, I use it a lot for rendering making the amount of CUDA cores important. The 780Ti has 2880 cores which was the same as the Titan but the 980 only has 2048 cores.

 

As 780Ti seem quite difficult to get in the UK (not much choice) does anyone know if there are plans for a "980Ti" to give me more CUDA. FYI: I cannot afford a Titan or the Pro range of Nvidia Cards.

There are still 780tis available as long as your are not too picky of the brand/cooler, AFAIK its faster for rendering, and a little slower for gaming - although mostly on par

 

the 980 does have some better tech though

 

The 980 is still probably a better choice but it depends HOW important rendering is

the 780ti is a titan just without the double precision memory and only 3gb vram.

but you're right and in the UK it's still a hefty price tag compared to the newer 980.

there will be a 980ti,my bets are they're just holding off till amd announce the r9 390x and nvidia will be like "ta da! this thing shits all over your new card but is twice as much!!"

Well, any info on 980Ti would be speculations and you know how that goes. If Nvidia have something like 980Ti up their sleeve, they gonna most probably wait for AMD to release their 3XX series of cards.

i would recomend the gtx 980 for its extra vram and is about tyed in gaming performance and unless you are usinf adobe premiere pro you probably wont really take attvatage of the many extra cudas

There are plenty of people who believe it will happen, I am not one of them, since the 780 Ti was Nvidia responding to the R9 290x, and I also recall something about the 980 being fully enabled, not sure where from though

I don't think that's right, there'll most likely be a maxwell titan with even more cuda cores

If and when a new Titan comes out, the original Titan/ Black should drop in value, especially second hand.

I had a 780Ti and changed to a 980, 980 seems to be much better and more stable i recommend the gigabyte G1

maybe the 980 is just broken 980ti's like the 970 is the 980.. lol that sentence makes total sense.

basically the 980ti is just more in every way, as a fluke from the really good slabs of silicone they produce while making the 980.

or it could just have more vram, Rops flops and do das and be based on a completely different version of the maxwell architecture.

No I'm not sure either, I think it was in regards to the SMPs (I think that is what Nvidia call them) and shader units I could be wrong

The rumor has it that it is possible that nVidia launches the Maxwell Titan this February, which would kind of make sense because the original Titan was launched in Feb 2013, but either way this is for professionals or enthusiasts, because the price tag of that card will be above 1100USD a piece (rumor says 1400USD, I personally doubt this, but we´ll see). The next Titan will be a monster just as the original Titan was and all GTX980s will be cannon fodder for it, BUT there´s no guarantee if and when we will see a GTX980Ti and if, like mentioned here before, this will not be released until AMD has made the move on their new highend GPU.

 

As recommendation I´d probably try to buy a used GTX780Ti on Ebay if you have a tight budget, because a GTX980 isn´t really cheap not even on Ebay.
