Hey guys, I'm currently thinking of getting a 4790k to replace my 4670k which happens to be a bad chip. Here in germany the 4790k is around €340 new, if you buy from any of the major sellers.

Now you may have heard of siliconlottery.com before, they offer binned and pre-tested CPUs, including the 4790k. A 4790k confirmed to run stable at 4.8GHz (1.32V) costs $309 in US dollars. That's €270, AND they ship to germany.

Has any of the european members here ever bought from them? There has to be some kind of drawback, something along the lines of import fees or something similar. Otherwise thats a 4.8GHz-binned 4790k for €70 less than a normal one. That sounds too good to be true.

Any thoughts?

Well import taxes in germany are 19%, so that makes €320, still cheaper than a new one here. Add ~$20 for shipping and its about the same cost.

THe only reason everyone doesn't import is becuase of RMAing. YOu'd have to pay a large amount to ship it, then you'd have to wait for weeks on end to get it back again.

yeah, that would suck. Luckily CPUs aren't as prone to breaking as GPUs or other components.

I'd say it isn't worth it. Take the chance in the sillicon lottery!

Possible work-around: I'm not familiar with the return policy of your retailer but here in Denmark we have 14-days of full return, meaning that if you want to return your product (for whatever reason) you can. So, you could buy a 4790K, slab it on your bench and test it for stabillity and if it doesn't meet your requirement, ship it back!
