I'm looking at returning my GTX 970 on principle as I refuse to use a product from a company that lied outright about it (I did the same with AMD when I found that the specs printed/stamped/etched/whatever on my "K6-2" were completely false-it was from the first K6 line).
This is the online store I refer to use: http://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts/video-cards, and I'm deciding between these 2 cards, the R9 290 (Gigabyte- http://www.computeralliance.com.au/amd-r9-290-4gb-gigabyte-overlocked-pcie-video-card-pn-r929oc-4gd ) and the MSI version ( http://www.computeralliance.com.au/amd-r9-290-4gb-msi-gaming-pcie-video-card-pn-r9290-gaming-4g ), which would I be better off with? Because the R9 290X cards are just under or over the return value of my GTX 970 ($565).

What's your location? Because in the States, the GTX 970 is around $330. Having the location will help us pick you a card close to your budget.

Also. You won't get a card better than the GTX 970 unless you buy the 290x. Even then, the upgrade is very.. marginal. Keep your 970, and deal with the fact that your $330 card isn't as good as a $550 card. Or buy the 980. Your choice.

I would get the Gigabyte card. I use a 980 G1 Gaming and the cooler does a great job.

(Btw.: No one lied to you. No one ever said, that the 4GB will be available at full speed...)

Cache, ROPS. And their backtracking on a driver to better utilize the last 500MB of vRAM.

I'm having to replace my motherboard, and since I game at 1080p an AMD card will be fine, with the money left over from getting the refund and buying a R9 290, I could get a decent ATX motherboard.

Oh well. It performs just fine at 1080p. And just fine at 1440p is most (majority) cases. Don't think you'll get a 4K card for $300 yet. Keep the card, or buy the 980 for $550.
