Hey everyone,

So ive been building rigs for a lot of years now both high end water cooled and the more typical air cooled systems. My current system (in sig) is going to be sold to a friend in dire need of a new pc, You might say im doing him a huge favor by selling it to him really cheap. Now in doing so i need a new pc as i require it for work. so here is what i really need help with..

My work involves a lot of 3d modelling and getting said models ready for cnc machining among other uses. At home i do a ton of photo video editing for friends, family and have recently started making small youtube intros for friends that are really getting into that sort of thing. I also do ALOT of gaming on my machine, triple monitor surround etc

What do you guys think is my better option in this case, Price is of no concern this time around so, Should i lean towards the 4790k and just load it up with 32gb of high speed ddr3 or should i go towards a 5930k and load that one up with 32gb's of ddr4?

Thats what i was thinking, I was already leaning towards the X99 chipset anyway but ive always be that guy doing that kind of work on the 115x platforms lol. I hope the price of DDR4 drops in the next few months then when im doing the build because its INSANE right now, I havent had the chance to look but are there any aesthetically pleasing DDR4 kits out there that ARENT red. No offense to anyone that uses them they are nice but i despise black and red builds with every bit of my being lol im planning a white and blue build this time around with a custom loop.

You know whats funny about that parts list.... My thought was EXACTLY that except i had asus strix cards on the list instead! only difference really is im doing a custom water cooling loop as i already have everything except gpu blocks for it.

Edit: I feel i should ask this though, Is the 5820k worth that extra price tag over the 4790k to justify the X99 platform? I feel like if im going to go X99 i should lean towards the 5930k, I do plan to add a 3rd 980 down the road since i am running triple monitors I know i will want that extra gpu horse power. Im just curious whether the 5820k is going to handle 3 way sli overly well. the whole 2011 platform is new territory for me.

You could go strix but the G1 is binned and has (I believe) a better PCB. Going with the strix is not bad though but since you're doing custom watercooling: Get the EVGA card that has the reference PCB. EVGA will honor your warranty even if you put a waterblock on it, you just need to return it in its original state and they will most likely honor the warranty.

TLDR:

Get EVGA if watercooling with custom solutions

- For what you do, yes the extra cores are so worth it

- The 5930k has 40 lanes, the 5820k has 28 lanes. 3-way SLI needs 24 lanes so you even have 4 lanes to spare for M.2. Also 3-way SLI is often not worth it because it scales not as well and 3-way configs tend to have tons of stutter

- The 5820k is fine for 3-way SLI

Yeah im aware scaling isnt great i have a 3 way sli 580 rig in the house right now. Ive gotten to play with my friends triple sli 980 setup on triple monitors and it was fluid enough for my tastes and allowed me to really push the games into fluid 60fps at high settings on triple screens. if im able to slip an M.2 in by having the 5930k and those few extra lanes i may splurge that extra bit for the 5930k in the end. Its going to be at least another month before i build possibly 2 so i have some time to fine tune and decide. I remember hearing rumour of another high end card coming from nvidia, Does anyone know when that thing may get announced if i should maybe wait for it?

The 5820k will run 3-way SLI and an M.2 drive so you're good on that on the CPU lanes. As for the rumors you are hearing I can tell you this:

- The new AMD R9 3xx series is coming in Q2 2015 (Rumored TDP of 300W but hinted to be lower than that, for reference the 780ti is 250W and the R9 290 is 275W)

- The 980Ti/Titan X (Or Titan II, whatever they will call it) will have 3072 Cuda cores and is confirmed to be on the way, release date as of yet unknown I believe though I personally think Q2/Q3

- Waiting for this is your choice but really it doesn't seem worth it from what we know now

Ok, i plan to go with nvidia gpu's, I have a great deal of respect for amd as well but with how much I use shadowplay and the Nvidia Gameworks features i would really like to stay on the green team for now. I guess since i wont be building for at least another month or two we might (thats probably a big might) hear something about the 980ti/titan x or whatever the hell theyll call it. Thank you for the help :) I know tons about the 115x platforms but 2011 bones me :P
