Hi LinusTechTips forum! :D

I just currently overlocked my PNY Gtx 780.

                                  GPU Clock               Memory Clock               Boost

            Base Clocks   863MHz                  1502MHz                       902MHz

Overclocked Clocks   1000MHz                1639MHz                       1039Mhz

                                          Temps; 43-44C top ( Watercooled )

Unigine Heaven Benchmark http://nemesisup.cz/files/public/780gtxoverclock.png( Opinions? )

So Im wondering if I do overclock my CPU AMD FX 8320 which should be easy to get 4,2GHz to I get more FPS? if yes why? ... I kinda dont understand it how can CPU give me more FPS when CPU is CPU and GPU is GPU :D ( Newbie )

I know I could just try and see what happens but I mostly want to know how does it work?

Depends on how CPU dependent the game is. AI is calculated with CPU as well as Physics, in most games. Among other things. But if you have the cooling potential and can get it there, then do it.

Because CPU's usually do the physics calulations. Thats why a OC'd pentium can still run most games without a hitch.

1. Because the CPU isn't the only thing that does the job

2. Because your CPU is bottlenecking your GPU

Btw as im looking at one of your links in your profile or signature or w/e ( This is why u should not get AMD FX http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/page-3#entry3892901 )

so Lets say I have amd fx 8320 and on the graphs it says average fps 34-39 ( BF4 ). With I7 4770k ( Ive been thinking a lot about this CPU as my next Updrage ) it says average 62-70fps. Thats about 40% FPS gain.

If I now upgrade to i7 4770k do I get 40% FPS gain in BF4?

Ask @Suika for his personal experiences however you still see a substantial improvement to performance

The simple answer is the CPU affects it with latency. A good way to see this is if you can play Battlefield 4, you can type in the command PerfOverlay.DrawGraph 1 in the console and it will tell you how much delay the CPU and GPU are experiencing with each frame. Often times you will see the CPU spike up which basically just means that because of other tasks, certain data needed to push out the next frame had to wait resulting in it taking longer for the frame (aka lower fps).

This is how CPU affects framerate - based on how much latency it causes and whether the GPU can be constantly fed with data or is having to wait (this is why when your CPU is "bottlenecking" your GPU usage drops).

So overclocking the FX-8320 would provide a small performance boost in some games. Nothing gamechanging since the primary drawback of the FX chips AFAIK is the L2 & L3 cache latencies. The L2 cache takes almost twice as long to access compared to Intel's i5/i7 chips, and their L3 cache takes almost four times as long to access.

Intel i5-4690K @ 3.8GHz || Gigabyte Z97X-SLI || 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz || Asus GTX 760 2GB @ 1150 / 6400 || 128GB A-Data SX900 + 1TB Toshiba 7200RPM || Corsair RM650 || Fractal 3500W
