No, you should be fine.

The VRAM issues only occur at 4k, and with any luck Nvidia will push out drivers that put the desktop/background tasks on the slower VRAM negating the issue altogether.

Not two -- the minimum is three. Also, think about gaming on two monitors. Either you have a bezel dead center, or one monitor in front of you and then either a left OR right surround monitor.

no I didnt plan on gaming on both monitors at the same time. Its mostly for when I'm working

Yeah, not an issue at all then.

It depends on the games you intend to play. Right now a single 970 can play most games at 1440p 60fps at high settings, but others not so much. Start out with one 970, and if you don't get enough performance than get a second.

Also: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1355?vs=1351 (thisis the performance you should be expecting with a 970 vs. 980 -- just check the benchmarks for 1440p).

I wouldn't buy a second 970. I believe SLI is where the cards begin to run into problems in 1440p with your settings cranked up.

I think at this point I think you're safer buying a 980 as opposed to SLI 970s.

As someone with SLI 970's and 1440p, no idea what you mean by "run into problems"  I haven't found a game yet I can't max out & use DSR in.

The only game I've found I can get over 3.5gb is shadow of mordor @ downscaled 5k to 1440p and it was only using 3.7-4gb.

A quick search on Google reveals the problems. :P  I'd have to guess you got lucky with your cards if they don't give you any problems above 3.5GB VRAM usage.

I fear newer generation games will begin utilizing more VRAM, especially when at 1440p and definitely higher resolutions. Hence why I told OP they'd be safer overall with a single 980 for the time being, or they could wait for the 3xx series from AMD to release and see what turns up with those.

For now is the problem. I think technology is moving way too fast for the 970 to only have issues with just one game. I'll be interested in seeing how it fares with newer AAA releases, once some new AAA titles are released.
