Updating firmware should not erase any stored data, but it doesn't hurt to make a backup just in case. The updates can probably be found on Samsung's website in support somewhere. But yes, updating firmware is recommended because it, well, updates it. Many bugs/problems may be present from the launch firmware/software, so its always a good idea to update them when new firmware or software is released.

Download/install Samsung's magician and update it through that.

Personally I'd install magician (JUST MAGICIAN, NOT THE FIRMWARE) from the disk as Samsung's download page is a mess imo. After installing the program and updating it, check the firmware version. It shouldn't delete data but having a copy of the data somewhere else is always a good idea.

It's worth upgrading the firmware because certain Samsung 840 EVO models have read performance degradation issues that have been managed with a firmware update and a special tool to rewrite the blocks to address the issue.  Read more over here.  As other's have suggested, just mange it through Magician.  That's how I manage mine and I find the tool to be fairly polished.
