GTX 980 system hang

Go to solution Solved by Simon 23259,

Nope, not a single overclock, I think I've found the fix, someone suggested the GPU was faulty, I used the GPU from my old system and so far, no crashes.

Morning guys,

I recently build myself a new system and in all its glory it also likes to hang and not in a good way.

Whenever I play Crysis 2, Far Cry 3 or Metro Last Light, the whole system hangs after around 3 - 10 mins of gameplay, I have to hold down the power button. It has also suffered from a system hang in a couple of other games after a few hours but there are games that aren't GPU intensive.

These 3 games are the only ones so far that push the GPU as I get no higher than 50fps in all 3.

Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this?

I do have the latest GPU drivers installed.

I am about to run memtest for 4 hours.

System spec for anybody that needs it:

Core i7 5820k
MSI X99 M-Power board
16GB DDR4 Corsair Vengance @2400mhz
980GTX MSI Twin Frozr
Samsung 840 SSD @ 240GB
WD 1TB HDD
Corsair RM850 PSU
Corsair Graphite 760T

All of these parts are brand new apart from the SSD and HDD because they came from my old system.

When did this start exactly, did it happen initially when you had just built the system?

Yes, about a day after I built it, I loaded Metro Last Light and 5 mins in it froze. I've had the system 2 weeks now but I've been so busy at work I haven't had time to diagnose it.

Maybe you should make sure every component is seated correctly, like the CPU, RAM and GPU.

I have checked the seating, I had an issue with late CPU initialisation, that turns out to be one stick of DDR4 not seated correctly. Everything is now in place.

Temp wise, I have a temp display on the mobo and its never gone higher than 55c and the cpu is not overclocked.

Just ran FC3 using realtemp and a couple of other programs:

At the time of the crash

CPU @ 44C

GPU @ 67C

GPU utilisation 99%

These 3 games are the only ones so far being rendered using Nvidia's own DSR, could that affect anything?
