Hello. I already made a thread about upgrading my hardware but since I'm having second thoughts about the recommendations there, I am reviving the subject now.

Current Mobo/CPU: Asus P5Q3 Deluxe/Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.4ghz (OC'd to 3.00ghz)

What I want: A processor that can handle heavy multi-tasking and video editing. Like rendering a 1080p video while recording another one at 1080p in a running game. I primarily play Vindictus, and want to be able to record solo gameplay at stable 60 FPS in 1080p resolutions, as well as stream it (generally games, not just Vindictus).

Am I willing to overclock?: Maybe. But I won't do it if I don't have to. I would prefer it if the new processor was fast enough for my tasks without the need for overclocking.

Water or Air cooling?: I prefer Air, but in the end, it's all about what keeps the processor the coolest and quietest.

Do I need a new PSU as well?: Maybe. My current one is only 450 watts, but everything is working fine. I don't know if I'll need more power for this upgrade. My GPU is a GTX 970 (I'm bottlenecked to hell...).

Budget and shopping place: Those don't matter. I'm just here looking for components. Just tell me what cpu/mobo combo can outperform my current setup and satisfy my "wants". But let's not rape my wallet for like 1% performance increase please.

For the record, the main discussion subject of my previous thread was the Intel Xeon E3 1231 V3 (3.4ghz).

Thank you for reading.

a 4970k or 5820k (if you don't mind the price)

Most X99 and 1150 motherboards over $150 will do you very well :)

Never heard of this 4970k you speak of. But since you mentioned the 1150 socket, I'm guessing you're talking about the 4790k and just misspelled it. Thank you for your suggestion though. The i7 processors are truly amazing chips.

You could just get the i5 4690K leaving room to OC. Cooler: hyper 212 EVO.

If your PSU is as old as your CPU, yeah, by all means get a new one. Get a gold 600W or something.

The 4690k was always in my list. The problem is, I don't know if it can handle video/image editing software without taking ages and streaming without lagging.

Ahaha sorry. I haven't gotten that much sleep lately because of snowboarding all weekend, and I'm new to the whole Intel CPU thing xD

I think the 4790k may struggle a bit :L

The problem with the 5820k though is you'd need DDR4 ram.. Apart from that it would tank pretty much everything.

Unless you like to make huge images and can't afford to wait too long. The i5-4690K (remember, overclockable) will suffice. If time IS an issue to that extent then look at the 2011-V3 i7 though I personally think for now it's a waste of money. Maybe later if DDR4 becomes cheaper and 8 cores become more viable. If you want to record, get a second rig with a capture card and an FX 8320. Those are cheap and great at streaming. That could save a lot of money.

Alright, you kinda convinced me to go with the 4690k, but I have 3 questions about it. 1. Can it stream games and record Vindictus at 60 FPS (1080p)?, 2. What would be a good value PSU for the 4690k and a GTX 970? And 3. Any motherboard recommendation for it? I know I'll probably end up with a Z97... just maybe a particular one gets the job done better than others. Cheers.

I really like that question answer style in your post. I am doing video editing on a i5 and a GTX 970. From my experience I would recommend you a i7. A Xeon is nice too, but squeezing some power with ocing out of that i7 is even nicer. i7 and a 970 on a 450 Watt PSU is fine, aslong as you don't watercool and install fancy lighting. It still wouldn't be a bad idea to get a newer PSU with a bit more wattage, just to have some headroom.

1. Yes and it should be able to reach 60 fps. 2. Be Quiet E9, EVGA Nova, Corsair RM 850. 3. Anythink from Asus or MSI, none of them are bad, just choose the Z97 that looks best to you. Gigabyte should be fine too, but their software isn't that nice. The MSI Gaming 5 or MPower are nice.

I see. Could I get some specific cpu/model/psu model recommendations please? I'm mostly here for that...
