GTX 760 Crashing

Go to solution Solved by Imakuni,

I did OC it when I first got it about a year ago, not too much just a bit. But haven't change any of the settings since than.

Any ideas of why this happen only if the computer has been recently rebooted? That is the weirdest part to me.

I'll explain. Your OC WAS stable when you did it. But NOW, it isn't anymore.

Being unstable, the driver crashes, as you pointed out. When it does, the card is reset back to factory speeds; at that point, it is completely stable, and you can play games as usual without crashing. Once you reboot the PC, the unstable OC is reapplied, making the driver crash.

Now, as to why your OC is now unstable, there could be a number of reasons. The easiest to think of, is the thermal compound; it got dry over time. That's a natural occurrence, it happens with time. Try removing the old paste, and applying new, high quality stuff. This might fix the OC; at the very least, it should improve on temps.

Other than that, reduce the OC.

Starting a couple weeks ago I began to have problems with my GTX 760. It is one of the EVGA overclocked ones (can't remember the exact model) and it's been working flawlessly for over a year now. The card (or maybe the driver?) is crashing while playing games or under other heavy loads. It happens once and doesn't happen again until I reboot my computer. Once the computer is rebooted it crashes as soon as it goes under load again. When it crashes, the screen goes completely blank and I can hear the fans on the card stop. Then a second or two later everything comes back to live.

After it crashes it recovers and works perfectly fine, even under higher loads then when it crashed. I've checked the temps and they're perfectly normal and I haven't changed any settings in months. I also have the most up to date driver from nVidia. Below is some basic system specs. Any ideas on what is causing this? And let me know if you need more info.

System

i7-3770

16gb HyperX Fury Memory

ASUS P8Z77 MOBO (or a similar, been awhile since I bought it)

Corsair RM550

A SSD and a couple HDD

Thanks Guys (and Girls)!

I bet 10 bucks you have OCed your card. Am I right?

You can try to go back to an older driver version first of all. You won´t really benefit from an updated driver too much with the GTX760. So this is where I´d start.

If the problem still continues then I´d probably try a different PCIe slot. Just to verify that the board is fine. Well and then you have the option with another PSU and to test (if possible) the card in another PC.

If you do not run any higher OCs and your temps are fine, your VRAM or the phases of the card could be damaged. Do you have any kind of artifacting? EVGA´s customer service is superior. Just contact them if the problem still exists after these tests and I´m sure they will help you :) .

Intel i7 7820X (delidded) @ 4.9GHz - MSI X299 M7 ACK + EKWB Fullcover Block - G.Skill Trident Z 32GB @ 3466MHz - nVidia Titan Xp + EKWB Fullcover Block @ 2.1GHz - Samsung 960Pro 2x - WDD Blue 2TB - Seasonic 750W Platinum - modded Corsair 600C - Hardtubed Custom Watercooling

And I'll try an older driver, but the issue started and I updated the driver for the first time in about 3 or so months trying to fix it. So don't think it's the driver.

And no artifacting. And I'll try switch PCIe slots when I get a chance. I'll update if that works.

Any ideas of why this happen only if the computer has been recently rebooted? That is the weirdest part to me.

I´ve seen something similar before and thought the GPU was bad, but it turned out that the PSU was the issue. So keep an eye on your PSU as well.
