Hey guys,

I'm looking for a replacement hard drive for my PS3 FAT (model: CECHL01). I'm not sure which one to get that will work with zero problems.

The plan is to stay completely within the PS3 standard HDD requirements because I don't want to spend money buying another "dud".

Requirements: 5400RPM, 9.5mm thick, 2.5", 250GB - 320GB.

A few years ago I bought a Western Digital WD5000BPVT, it worked fine up to now but now it has started malfunctioning making my PS3 abruptly shut itself down after beeping three times. It also has this dumb feature where it parks the head off disc (after very little time has passed) when its not in use, which causes games to briefly freeze while the head is being un-parked.

Normally I would go with Western Digital as I have a lot of fate in them but I can't find any information on whether their still using the head park feature. It also seems that PS3 are pretty fussy on which HDD's they work with, leading me to think the WD might be hitting compatibility issues.

I've read that Samsung and Hitachi make some good HDD that work well with the PS3? Any recommendations.

Thanks!

I think any drive without a parking feature will work. You should get an SSD. In games like GTA V the load times are reduced. That game's load times can be horrid sometimes.

 eGPU Setup: Macbook Pro 13" 16GB DDR3 RAM, 512GB SSD, i5 3210M, GTX 980 eGPU

New PC: i7-4790k, Corsair H100iGTX, ASrock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer, 24GB Ram, 850 EVO 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, GTX 1080 Fractal Design R4, EVGA Supernova G2 650W

Everything works as long as it's the same thickness and same connection and not bigger than 1tb iirc.

Even a ssd works.

I've used tons of HDD's in PS3's they all worked fine but I personally stay away from Seagate.

Well to my understanding SSD's aren't worth it because the max. transfer speeds the PS3 can handle is 1.5 GB/s. Plus I'm looking to keep the cost of this replacement as low as possible.

I've thrown a few in my PS3 and all have worked, including WD.

Just grab a Hitachi drive if you're worried.

Yeah, I'm definitely avoiding Seagate and the WD's. Hitachi or HGST (whatever they're calling themselves now) or Samsung, but which model? I'm having a hard time finding one with the specs I require.
