I will be building my PC in a month and I need to choose which graphics card I will use. I am considering either a 770 or a 7970. I know that the 770 might give me a little bit better performance, but I really like the idea of getting free games with the 7970. I want to get Crysis 3 so with the 7970, that is one less game I have to buy. Is it worth it to buy a 770 over a 7970 for the extra performance it has?

CPU: RYZEN 5 2600   Motherboard: MSI B450I GAMING PLUS AC   Memory: CORSAIR VENGEANCE LPX 16GB 3200MHZ   Storage: TEAM GROUP MP33 1TB

GPU: EVGA GTX 1070 FTW   Case: COOLER MASTER NR200P   PSU: CORSAIR SF600   Mouse: G PRO WIRELESS   Keyboard: ANNE PRO 2

for the game maybe but the performance in crysis 3 alone is a pretty big gap, last time i tested the 770 had a 15fps difference granted i have very low ambient temps so gpu boost 2 could have given it a huge edge.. other then that i would still get the 770 regardless

If you want the games that comes with the 7970, buy the 7970.

The performance of both cards is pretty much the same.

Well if the performance is the same, it would be stupid to buy a 770.

7970 imo. but gpu boost 2.0 is a huge factor in this because it is the best thing ever and you will really come to appreciate it.

Here is a nice review from Anandtech about the 770 and and 7970 benchmarks. There are 7970's that are pushing really high numbers like the Lightning BE. The free games are great too but maybe with this review you can come to your own conclusion.

I should have mentioned that the only game I am really interested in with the 7970 is Crysis 3, so the value is a bit less. But a free game is still a free game.

I would wait and see if the 9000 series by AMD provides significant performance improvements for the price point.

I can't really wait. I have to build my computer in approximately a month.

I would have to say that i was in the same predicament as you are.. i just purchased a MSI z87-g45 gaming motherboard and was wondering which graphic card would best compliment it.. I've had 4 radeon cards in the past and to be honest i really liked them. My friends had nvidia cards and on occasion i would go green seeing Physx running on a few games. Now as far as performance is concerned in my opinion anything that is able to give you 60+ frames is great (unless your doing 3d gaming), and beyond that it would be the additional perks of the card that will make it a selling point. If you are an astute gamer then i believe you might be able to spot the difference between 60fps and 90 fps, and if you are just looking at fps numbers, i would suggest you take a look at guru3d's review on the 770 first. I personally will be going for the msi 770 gaming.. it compliments my motherboard (although you might not really care about that one!!), and more importantly i think the price to performance value is quite good. In the long run if i do find gaming quite difficult, i could pair it with another 770, which i think.. should be as good as a 690 in performance.. although i could be wrong.

I know the benefits of each card, and the price of each card. I want to know if it is worth it to spend a little bit more on the 770 for the extra performance.

It's not worth it, they have the same performance when the 7970 is overclocked(770 has GPU boost 2.0, it overclocks automatically).
