Question About GPU Fans

Hey guys, I'm kinda new to pc stuff, and I had a question about fans on graphics cards. Wouldn't it be better for gpus to have their fans firing upwards? Like instead of the fans shooting air over the fins and then the hot air all over the cards and out each edge, wouldn't it be better if they sucked air in the edges and blew the hot air out the fans, down into your case? Then the air would be going down and the fans could eject it out the back somewhere. That just seems more logical to me, but I'm no expert. :p Thanks!

Even if it was better its way to late to change that now every GPU in the past has been built with a fan on the bottom and they push cool air from the bottom of the case up toward the cpu area so it can be exhausted.

That's not the way air works.

Air coming off the fan is being directed in a certain direction.

Air going into a fan is being sucked from just about every direction around the immediate area of the fan. And it will follow the path of least resistance.

A fan blowing on to the card will put more air in contact with the fins than a fan blowing away from the card would. By a lot. 

It wouldn't work sadly.

But either way the difference wouldn't be too large and the current design works fine

though it seems like a good idea i doubt it would make much difference, its the same idea as the 90 degree motherboard mounting in silverstone cases, it doesnt actually improve temps by much if it does at all but it looks cool :) more direct to your idea though if your using an air cooler that would be blowing 70 degree heat straight into your cpu cooler and hence increase those temps

I have a feeling that your idea would open a huge can of worms. there is probably reasons they have to do it this way.

That would actually cause higher temperatures. Air would be coming in from the sides of the cards the most so not as much fresh air intake. With the way the fans are currently the air travels over all the fins even in the middle because the fan is exposed and nothing is blocking the air, then gets pushed outwards so there is more heat dissipation. If it pulled the air from the sides instead of the bottom not as much air would be blowing through the middle fins because the pcb would be blocking the air. It can only come in from the sides effectively so only the fins on the edge would get a proper amount of air flowing through them. This would increase temperatures by quite a lot.
