If you're not interested in the extras nVidia offer (PhysX or Nvidia 3D etc.) than Radeon is probably the way to go at the moment. The GTX 970 was looking good for a while but it seems ATI edged them out in terms of price to performance, and on top of that it seems the GTX 970 now has been found to have memory issues.

Obviously if you absolutely wanted an nVidia 3D kit then you'd have to go nVidia but you'd probably have to be pretty hard-core into stereoscopic 3D (or just have lots of spare cash) to go that route since the available Stereoscopic 3D titles are flagging (and Occulus is just around the corner).

need to know 3 things:

current graphic card.

current power supply.

current budget.

something tells me you have a pre-built with a small psu, but either way the 3 items above are needed to make decide whats best. otherwise, a 280 or 760 are probably the best gpu's that processor can push with a good enough power supply.

Budget: $150-300~

Power Supply: 350w

Graphics Card: Geforce Gt 610

I be using it for gaming mainly.

Personally right now the best value for money option is the r9 290 in my opinion. Or at a lower price the 280x, which will still do great at 1080p resolution.

Oh and welcome to the forums :)

Edit; now sure about the psu requirements and the 290 though.

Bleigh!  Ever hear of AC series?

that power supply probably doesn't have any pci-e power connectors, so options would be limited. the wattage would not be enough for anything other than a 750 Ti or r7 250.

You can probably find a decent power supply, like an EVGA 500 or 600 watt bronze, and get an R9 280/280x as well and keep it under 300 dollars. prices may vary depending on country though. in canada you could get a 290 and decent 600w power supply for 300, a bit less in the states.

For the 280 I do not think that is any better one to get, they're all pretty good. :) As for the 290 I do believe Sapphire Vapour-x cards tend to preform best, but do have a price premium to go with that. (perhaps the gigabyte one as a cheaper option?)

Good that you've gotten into it, gnu brands is a thing I usually love to compare :) Also Briggs's advice is quite good!

Damn thats some serious value for 300 dollars, nice. Would that be a stock card?

evga are exclusive to nvidia, but if going for an AMD graphic card then sapphire are really good. if going for nvidia graphic card evga are really good (my experience is limited to msi and evga for Nvidia).

I personally like Gigabyte cards for either AMD or Nvidia.
