i have a desktop i bought a year ago and want to upgrade to an ssd. i want to buy this one . i was wondering, does it matter that it says  "ssd for laptops".

The copy i have of windows came with my pc, does that matter when upgrading it.

No, it doesn't matter. As long as they're 2.5" or M.2 or mSATA, you'll be fine.

Current Rig: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, Abit IN9-32MAX nForce 680i board, Galaxy GT610 1GB DDR3 gpu, Cooler Master Mystique 632S Full ATX case, 1 2TB Seagate Barracuda SATA and 1x200gb Maxtor SATA drives, 1 LG SATA DVD drive, Windows 10. All currently runs like shit :D

If i re-install how would i activate windows without the product key?

How did you get windows? I'd hunt that key down or attempt a clone instead. Edit: if your pc came with a recovery cd you might get lucky and the key might be embedded in the reinstall (way it worked on my old dell win7)

its the version that came on the pc

There should be some key sticker on the PC itself.

i just looked on  and in it and can't find a sticker with the key

There should be a Sticker of Authenticity. Every OEM PC that gets shipped out usually has a sticker like this

Might be hard to believe, but i just checked the whole pc twice and there was no sticker with it on it.

he's right. Doesn't show anywhere on that model. From what I gather, you either have a recovery cd or the recovery is on the pc itself. You might have to call asus support for the product key.

ok i just did some reading, with windows 8 there is no sticker with a key to type in. on a machine that came with Windows 8, the installation process automatically grabs the software product key from the motherboard BIOS with no input from the user

I bought the 1tb version for my laptop and used their Samsung Data Migration Software to just clone the drive my laptop came with over to the ssd and it worked perfect without a hitch.
