I just got the new Dell XPS 13 that came out at CES and as expected its amazing. However I assumed that it would ship with a low quality SSD which it did, 128GB 135 writes 530 reads. The drive is a Samsung PM851 Sata M.2 Drive so it seems like its a sata 6gb/s drive that plugs in with an M.2 connector. What I'm wondering is can I replace it with something like the Samsung XP 941 512 GB SSD, which is the same M.2 form factor but uses 4 PCI express lanes to interface with the CPU. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I don't see why not, it's only a M.2 SSD.

my concern was that the computer was originally made to run with a sata m.2 ssd, which hooks into a sata controller just like a 2.5in drive would, whereas the new drive wouldn't work with the sata controller and would go directly to the cpu via pcie lanes

It should work, although the speeds might be capped to 550Mbps, since it runs through a SATA controller.

I guess we'll find out lol, either it will magically switch to pcie 2.0 x4 (which the mobo is keyed for but doesn't necessarily support) or I'll completely max out the sata III controller, win win
