Search boxes leave sites vulnerable to XSS. 

To combat this, the maximum search characters has to be limited. With all the terminology repeated over and over all over the forum, this would reduce the ability to type in specific thread information. 

Also, encoding means that even blocking characters and limiting the number of characters does not prevent XSS.
