Hey,

I was deciding between HDD's today and debating with my friend what would be better... He thought using a 4TB Hybrid disk by Seagate for 170 USD and I was thinking of just using a WD Caviar Green 2TB, 5400 RPM and 64MB cache while also using a Crucial M550 256GB... I would have thought my combination would've been been better though it is a bit more expensive and is less storage space...

But here's the deal, I'm trying to find out whether WD is better than Seagate or Seagate is better than WD... Does anyone know and have solid evidence? I was planning on using a 2TB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM for 80 USD but then saw the WD Caviar Green 2TB 5400RPM but is more expensive... Is it better as LTT uses WD Greens all the time...

When it comes to the RPM... Is more better?

If you can answer any of these large amount of questions, please do!

Thanks!

We don't use Greens all the time, we mostly recommend Blues or Seagate Barracudas. WD and Seagate are the same, both are very reliable. And yes, more RPM is better. A 5400RPM drive is good enough for storage, but no for an OS boot drive. I suggest that you get an SSD anda Seagate Barracuda 2TB.

LTT's unofficial Windows activation expert.

Okay, thanks for the tip! Seagate Barracuda it is! And I'll be using a Crucial M550 256 GB for boot drive.

Most of my experience has been with WD, but even then pick what's most appropriate. Media pc, use a green (lower temps, and quieter for more airflow restricted cases). Gaming black is your friend (quicker reads, and better response). If you're the type to leave your computer on 24/7 or running folding@home etc. you might want to look at a red.

Do you need a ssd? Well if your on this forum I think 99% of the members would ask....Why don't you have one already?
