This build is 8 months old and has been working fine until now. Just to clarify that it's not an new "I don't know how to build it!" situation since it already worked.

Specs:

Asus Maximus VI Hero

Intel 4770k

8GB Gskill Ripjaw X

Seasonic SS-760XP2

I disconnected my graphics card and drives immediately so they're not even part of the issue.

Background: I've had a few occasions where it would shut off at random which most people seem to associate with power supplies. Other than that, system has worked fine for months. Last night I was doing some work on it which consisted solely of unplugging and plugging in fans.(While turned off of course) So I can't imagine I screwed anything up. Went to turn it back on and suddenly I have no more desktop. You can imagine my confusion. My guess is rather that whatever was going wrong just hit it's last straw on the last shut down.

Anyway, I've pretty much rebuilt the entire system since then, tested outside the case, cleared cmos, flashed bios, tried another power supply, and I think it's becoming clear that my motherboard is a goner. Mainly asking here to get any second opinions and query about some potential causes. For example, my PSU seems to have died as well... I did a few paperclip tests last night and it was working alone at first, but then it started making these clicking/clanking noises and now it won't respond at all. Given that fact, could a faulty power supply have damaged the motherboard? I now have a confirmed-to-be-working psu and the result of the motherboard is to receive power, but is giving me a 00 q-code every time I attempt to boot. This is a better result then my actual psu which started out getting no response; then it would attempt to boot and fail; and then it lit up the power button but no response when pressed, and no error code. All of those were independent situations Some say a 00 code is a result of not detecting a processor, so I suppose it could be that... but how often do Intel CPU's die, really? I had it over clocked but only to 4.2Ghz and temperatures were fine. Sucks if it is that since I'm out 300 dollars... although less trouble than if it's the motherboard.(OEM Windows with 300 gigs of game files on a 6Gb internet connection  )

So yeah there's my problem, any information is appreciated.

00 code is asus's equivalent of looking at the board, shrugging it's shoulders and going...."I don't know, but it looks expensive"

It is literally a case of going through and testing every component individually. If it's more than one component, well did you ever have to replace two bulbs on Christmas tree lights as a kid?

Best bet might be to borrow someone else's working rig, and test components on that.

That description of the code is brilliant, haha.

It's already been reduced to MB + CPU + PSU and the memory comes in and out. But yeah I'm probably going to take it down to a local shop to help test everything. Just thought someone might know if it's anything specific other than a blatantly dead board.
