what applications and files are considered "mass storage." Obviously things like; documents, photos, music, and videos, but what applications? I am asking because, I hear over and over "get an SSD for a boot drive and a mechanical HD for "mass storage."

So, I ask this what would benefit being stored on an SSD? People are saying you won't notice the difference when starting a game ect... Should I just get a <100GB SSD for Windows and Chrome?

I also hear things like "just put your most used applications on the SSD" and for me that is games. The only application I use other than games is Chrome.

trust me starting a game is so much faster from a ssd you will notice.

anything you use a lot on ssd:  programes, games and so on. keep files on the HD to reduce writes to the ssd.

So the best way to gauge how much space you need if you go with the SSD + Mechanical HDD is to determine what you use and how much it takes up in space and sum the values:

  1. Windows OS (7 or 8.1?)
  2. Page File (Size?)
  3. Browser (Chrome)
  4. List all your games and the size they take up.

Windows 8.1 64-bit and currently my game library is quite small; The Sims 3 plus expansions, Dragon Age: Origins, Lords of the Fallen, Star Wars: The Old Republic and Endless Space.

However in the near future I will be getting All of the; Dragon Age series, Mass Effect series, Far Cry series, Knights of the Old Republic series. As well as Skyrim with the DLC and lots of mods.

The idea is that stuff you use a lot should be on the SSD and the files that you access infrequently (videos, audio, documents, etc) should go on the mechanical. Simple.

So, I should get a large SSD for my games? Is there a way to transfer the stock Windows apps to the mechanical after installing the OS to the SSD? Things I use frequently; Games, Chrome. Things I use infrequently; everything else.

Thats pretty much it, your line in the sand is to put your games, os and chrome on the SSd and everything else on the mechanical. I would leave the stock apps with OS.
