So I just got this Dell t1700 and Im having trouble understanding/figuring out exactly what kind of motherboard I have. I'm just starting to get into learning about PC hardware (been a mac guy for years, and i just never was even able to thinking about upgrading things) So is this motherboard made by Dell? how does it stack up against current quality?  Btw, I'm thinking of upgrading my PSU, but have read a few places Dell requires a special connection, that if you don't have, will fry your whole pc. is that still the case? any info is great, as i said, trying to increase my (basically nonexistent) knowledge of hardware/computer knowhow. thanks, DZA

Dell prebuilts always have dell mobos, that is why you don't buy prebuilts. Why you you need a new PSU?

I'm with the why new PSU thingy. Prebuilds use OEM mobos which may or may not be compatible with standards like ATX. So changing mobo and keeping case or other way around might not be possible. With PSUs you should be fine. Just check that PSU has all connectors you need.

the stock psu that came with the machine is 365w at 90% and about 295w at 65% 80 plus gold. I was shopping for a video card and almost everything needed at least 400w. I ended up getting a 750ti (partly because price, partly cause 300w) but if I make any further upgrades I would pretty much need a new PSU....right? Also the stock PSU only had one extra 6pin connector (now being occupied by 750ti). I got the whole machine, monitor, keyboard. mouse, windows 8.1. 16gb ram and an i5 4690 (1tera ssd and 500gb hdd) in the unopened box for 300$ so I'm pretty confident it was a good decision. (less confident in seller, but that's another story) Anyway, so from watching linus, the motherboard seems like a very trivial part of the system as long as its not too old. But my question remains, will I need to buy a PSU from dell or will any PSU connect and work fine (again, I read there used to be issues with an offbrand PSU frying the whole thing)

Anyway, thanks for any help, you guys are really helpful and nice which is really hard to find on forums. You'll be seeing a lot of posts from me as I try to increase my knowledge. Its actually refreshing to be back with PC after just dealing with macs for so long. cheers, DZA
