Small home server

Hello. So I wanted to run a server of my own. Thought of giving it a try. Can you give me just a rough idea of what all stuff i'm going to require to make a media and/or storage server? (I'm going to host my own game server later). Budget can fluctuate. Consider 500 US$ right now. 

 

OS not needed (gonna use Debian or something like that)

Peripherals not needed

Taking into consideration that it's only for media, 4-6 TB will be enough. I already have a Seagate 1TB drive lying around in my basket, which i'm going to use
