Hello everyone

I'm in a process of building myself new machine firstly for gaming but i will need it for work video editing, graphic design and i would like to have decent streaming capabilities, future proof it as much it can be and to be able to play at max settings at 1440p

My budget is 2850€ that is around 3360$ for those not living in EU.Since i have really old 19'' CRT SyncMaster 997mb monitor (please don't laugh at me :P ) it served me well for over 10 years,it is time to get new monitor.I decided to go for IPS/PLS over TN so i got AOC q2770Pqu and i also got corsair M95 and K70 so this cut my budget for 725€ so this leaves me only with little over 2100€ for components.

I made a list of components that i wanted to get but as i did research i saw many builds around 2000-2500$ with custom loops but i always end up short with money for it with components that i like to have...It would be nice to have custom loop but it's not imperative

Here is the list of what i had in mind:  MBO: Maximus Hero VII

                                                          CPU:  4790k

                                                          RAM:  G-skill F3-2400C10D-16GTX

                                                          GPU:  Asus Strix gtx 980

                                                          PSU:  AX 860W

                                                          SSD:  Samsung EVO 850 250gb

                                                          HDD:  WD red 3 tb

COOL:  H105 or 110i gt if become available on amazon

FANS:  Corsair SP 120 PWM quiet edition and NF-F12 industrialPPC

                                                        CASE:  450D

I would like your opinion on build  i made and if you wanna change some parts with other (I'm a bit stubborn so bare with me) I'd appreciate explanation why this component over the other...etc and to see what builds with this budget community end up with.

Thank you all in advance

Custom loops are generally only for the aesthetic, and are not even remotely price efficient. I would  probably upgrade from a 980 to 970 SLI, for the maybe $100 extra cost (85 Euros) would supply a pretty big performance boost. (That is if you want to deal with the potential issues, the power supply you already have is good enough if you decide to go that route. Possibly may want to go with a WD Black, or a WD Green depending on if you need that performance or not, as Red is more for NAS type builds, but not a huge deal.

Current Desktop Build | 2200G | RX 580 4GB | 8GB RAM | CTRL | Logitech G Pro Wireless

Laptop | 2018 MBA 256/16GB | MX Master

I took this PSU just for future proof so i can later on get another 980.

I read somewhere that red are great for 24/7 use it work cooler and quieter, didn't find any reason why not use it as storage and it is cheaper then black that is why i chose it. Would i be better of with black?

Hey Aislini,

I would be helpful to post a link to the place where you are buying from.
The build generally looks good and well planned.
I would suggest that you consider a X99 build with 4x4GB DDR4 RAM and a 5th gen i7 CPU (like the 5820k or the 5930k) for much better future proofing. If your budget limits you to to that, you could always get 2x4GB now and leave the other 2x4GB of memory for later. Also, you could drop to GTX970 and, down the road, add another one. The GTX970 would run pretty much everything you throw at it. GTX980 is an overkill for gaming IMHO. But the GPU is completely according to your preference.
Regarding the storage, WD Red drives are NAS/RAID class drives designed for cloud storage and RAID arrays. As you said, they work cool and quiet and are very robust. they are also a great option for a regular desktop drive. It works slower compared to WD Black drive but it would be the better choice if you are going for 24/7 workloads. Another option is to get WD Green drive which works with simmilar speed to the WD Red, but is an energy efficient, cool and quiet drive. What are you going to use the storage for?

You could also save some money on the PSU, case and get a cheaper SSD.

Hope this helps! Post some photos of the building process :)

Thank you for your reply it is much appreciated

I live in Croatia and prices here are atrocious, there is around 1500€ difference in prices from where i live and amazon. So i will be buying all of the components from amazon.de. I have some relatives in Germany so free shipping.

I considered to get x99 but ram is still quite pricy and i have to get new monitor sadly my budget is not allowing it.I'm glad that this build is good and i will be able to OC it well so it can cope with everything i throw at it and i think i will be good with this build for next few years.

Great it's good that i can use red in my pc.Hdd will be used just for storage without partition, but i will get another wd red so i can have them in raid.Just to be on safe side.Have lots of work related projects,documents....it would be really bad if something goes wrong with one hdd.My first choice was green but as i read some tests and reviews many people complained that green was not working well with raid and it looked to me that red was all around better so i change my mind.

Hmm I don't think it is good thing to cut corners on psu it is important part of the build and it is better to pay a bit more for good quality unit.I checked jonnyguru to check AX 860

If i found my old case in garage i will strip it down to bare bones and build myself 450d.But that project might take few months because i have shit tons of other work.

I read on quite a few places that it would be better to get 2 x 970 but i kinda opted to get one stronger card for now and then down the line get second. And by that time there might be even more games that work well with sli

Thank you all for all of info and opinions

Well, sorry to her that you have to go through all the trouble for your parts.

Regarding the drives, it is normal for WD Green drives to have not as good performance as the WD Red ones simply because WD Red are designed for this purpose while WD Green are not NAS/RAID class drives. Those drives have additional features that enable them to work much better, safer and smoother in RAID environments. However, WD Green drives are reported to have good performance specifically in RAID1. But WD Red would be the better choice.

Regarding the GPU, you have a very good point and most games are not currently optimized well for SLI (or Crossfire for that matter). But as a general rule, the more powerful part should last you longer in terms of future proofing.

Overall, as I said, you have a very good planned build there and this should last you for at least several years with a good potential for future upgrades.

Best of luck and do not hesitate to ask questions if you happen to have any :)
