Does Asus Smart Contrast Ratio Work?

So Asus has implemented their ASCR technology into some of their monitors. My question is does it actually work? Does it provide any notable difference between a standard monitor and a monitor with ASCR? Or is it all just another way to say dynamic contrast ratio?
