Most bizarre RAM situation

So I broke one of my 3 RAM sticks by opening it. On one side there is 8 of those small memory blocks (don't know if they have a name lol) 5 of them teared off of one side of the stick when i pulled of the aluminium cover.

I decided to see whether my PC would boot with one broken RAM stick. It didn't.

So I took off rest of those blocks from the broken side, put the stick in and booted. It f***ing worked  :lol: '

 

The question:

Why does my system recognize it as normally functioning RAM stick.

(It shows total RAM of 6GB, just as it did before the accident.)

Only change is that the system sees it as single channel instead of triple. 

Can someone explain what actually happened there?

I'm assuming you mean memory chip? If the chips aren't there anymore, the extra memory that is "seen" won't obviously work and it'll probably crash when trying to write to it.

You ripped the heatsink off the memory modules...? Way to go there. You're supposed to use something like a box knife to cut the glue to pull it off.

All you did was effectively break the solder that joined the chips to the RAM stick, the heat-spreader is holding it together now.

That doesn't explain the amount of channels downgrading from 3 to 1.  :huh:

That I'm not sure of, computers do weird things with damaged components. Just be glad that your not having to buy a replacement.

Haha. I'm getting RAM, hard drive and graphics card upgrades next week. that's one of the reasons I started messing around with them in the first place. Well, I'm happy I can still use my PC till next week. Thanks
