SLI question

When carry out sli it is obvious that you cannot use a different GPU (i.e. a GTX670 and GTX680), I know you can use different manufacturers, but is is advisable?, is it better or safer to use the same model, does it make any difference?. Any thoughts

From what I've read over the years, the things you need to match are the GPU and the VRAM, everything else can be thrown out. I would prefer the same branded card because it will look nicer in the case :)
