So my friend's PS3 Slim only reads DVD's and BluRay films and not games, I've been reading up on it and it seems it could be a few different things causing it.

I found that people had this problem when their laser was on it's way out.

I also found that people had this when their GPU was dying.

I just want to find out whether it is in fact the laser, so this would be an easy fix for me to do.

I know not all of you use consoles but I figured at least one person might be able to help diagnose the problem.

Thanks.

I would probably say its the laser. You can replace the laser somewhat easily and if it is still a problem you ruled out the laser and then you know its the gpu. :p

The majority of the threads of the problem were the laser, I've fixed a lot of things with Xbox's but never a PS3 so I just wanted to get someone else's opinion before spending someone else's money on a part that may not fix it.

If it's not the problem then I can just sell the laser on again.

The laser is on it's way out yet it reads DVD's and BluRays?

If it was failing surely it wouldn't also play those properly either?

Yeah, apparently it's pretty common with PS3 slims, not sure what causes it so I;m guessing the laser is dying

Ohh well I thought if it was dying it wouldn't read anything but there we go lol

All the more reason to have a PC, at least if you need a drive they're like £18 for an Asus :)

EDIT: Have you tried putting in a lens cleaner, might be worth a shot before cannibalising the console.

Not yet, as I've not seen the console yet but I will try that before hand
