Hello guys,

I was just wondering, if you want to overclock a cpu you will need a K version intel CPU (+20$), a overclockable motherboard (+20$) and a aftermarket cooler.. (+40$)

This will add about 80 bucks or more to your build but if you would take a better non overclockable processor (for the 80 bucks you just saved) and keep the stock cooler and a normal motherboard would it give the same performance or are there other reasons to overclock?

I'm not trying to offend anybody, I just want to learn and discuss :)

depends on what you are doing. If you are just using the pc for web browsing and maybe word processing then not at at all. Any new cpu can keep up with the workload of windows and even a bunch of different simple tasks like that. Your biggest bottleneck at this age will be the hard drive.

Ryzen 3700x -Evga RTX 2080 Super- Msi x570 Gaming Edge - G.Skill Ripjaws 3600Mhz RAM - EVGA SuperNova G3 750W -500gb 970 Evo - 250Gb Samsung 850 Evo - 250Gb Samsung 840 Evo  - 4Tb WD Blue- NZXT h500 - ROG Swift PG348Q

Get with the program man.

well lets a assume its a superbuild with an SSD and the same graphicscard, just pure CPU performance comparing, for instance compressing files or running a game

One could argue that the Z-mobo might have additional functionality that the cheaper non-overclockable mobo doesn't. The aftermarket cooler will probably be more quiet in lightweight situations wether the CPU is overclocked or not. Possibly even whilst gaming with a healthy overclock vs stock clocks and stock cooler.  Could you specify what CPU's we're talking about? And what's the usecase scenario?

Not even close dude. Especially when we are talking about people using things like pentiums. Just because the majority of people on the forums use ssd's does not mean your average person does. Very few people have made the switch if you look at the grand scheme. And even then with an ssd it's still going to be the system bottleneck.

As far as running games, there are many games that will benefit greatly. Some games not so much, as before. It depends all on what you want to do with it.

an i5 4670K vs i7 4770 for instance (230 vs 310 bucks) compare for gaming, video rendering, compressing files etc

I haven't got experience of hyperthreaded CPU's but I believe that a overclocked 4670k will beat a 4770 in games atleast at the moment. I don't expect that to change any time soon. When it comes to rendering I think that the 4770 might beat the 4670k but not by much though. Maybe Sean ^ might have more information on the subject.

it would be awesome if linus did a comparing video of this "problem" becasue there are so many pros and cons (warranty for example is also a thing for a lot of people)
