I game... fps,shooters, gta, skyrim and what not, I have a i7 920, with 6gb of ddr 3 1600 ram, etc...

X99 will not be worth it if you only game. If anything it will perform worse then 4690K/4790K when at out-of-the-box clock speeds. Wait till Broadwell desktop chips come out, and grab a new Broadwell i5 or i7 then. You can also move your existing DDR3 RAM over, reducing cost even further as you don't need to buy new (expensive) DDR4 if you were to go X99.

Actually for only gaming the i7 isnt even neccissaary, save some money and get a 4690k with maybe another 780 or somehting, also for gaming 16gb ram is pretty usless (right now at least).

I looked at the cost of going with the z97 /1150 socket and the prices for what i would buy is equal too the cost of the z97/1150 Well a few hundred less, Its not much of a saving for me... I do not think so. opps added wrong m.2

I'm not sure what is best, Going with the x99 is future proofing a bit though I think, but that's just me lol

Because that is WAY overkill for a Z97 build. $340 for a Z97 is just plain stupid when you can get just as good of a motherboard for less then half the price. You can also re-use your current RAM as Z97 will take DDR3

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($94.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI Z97-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($141.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $627.94

I never said 16GB of RAM.

Yes i know you didnt, i was agreeing with you in terms of the cpu choice and then simply adding more information for the person who asked the question.

ya, that's why i was going with x99 as i thought the same thing with the price of the motherboard , why pay that much when you can get the x99.... I like evga, but that's not bad though... I'll need a bigger drive then 128 lol

Because it would be a HUGE waste of money to buy that EVGA board.

Asus X99 is $373 while MSI Z97 is $141

If you're just gaming, then definitely stick to Z97. It's way better to save your cash and put it to better components down the road than to get practically worse gaming performance because you think it'll be better utilized later. Remember, games tend not to make use of many threads and need strong single-core performance, so the higher clock speeds of the Z97 platform chips are more important than the extra two cores of x99. Plus it's cheaper. Futureproof? You'll have saved money, and money is future proof. PCs are not.
