I currently have these two processors:

AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W Desktop Processor FD8350FRHKBOX

Intel Core i5-4430 Haswell Quad-Core 3.0GHz LGA 1150 84W Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80646I54430

I was told that the Intel was better when considering components for my upgrade. But upon having it for a few months I made a dumb decision and "Upgraded" to the AMD CPU thinking it was better. I understand that you cannot compare cores and clock speed between brand and just want a simple breakdown of what makes one better.

I play games like Farcry 3 and 4, Battlefield 3, and many other AAA games as well as indie games. I also plan on/play Star Citizen.

i5 is better and will allow you to upgrade the CPU in the future. Also, BF4/3 and other games will run better because the i5 has better per/core performance.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

AMD tends to have more cores for 3D rendering work and faster decoding (films/files etc).

Intel is more for pure gaming performance and mass market appeal.

Hang on, are you saying that Intel CPUs are only good for gaming? Just clarifying.

Intel for gaming purposes sir. It gives you a upgrade path. While AMD is still good, it isn't really good for gaming.

Remember a wise man once said, "You'll most likely hear/see more bad reviews from products than good, because if they get a good product, they won't bother to write a review, and if they got a bad product, they'll complain about the product" ~ SoftenButterCream

OK, thats what I was thinking, but was blinded by stubbornness...haha. So if im going to switch back I would be considering a Motherboard upgrade since I would want surround sound capabilities as well as upgradability. I currently have the MSI Z87-G41 and really have grown attached to my ASUS Sabertooth 990FX. So I was thinking of going to an ASUS Sabertooth z97 mark 2.

Also my GPU is the ASUS GTX770ti 4GB.

i'd keep the MSI board and just buy a cool sound card to add to it...this would be much cheaper...are you looking to SLI this 770 of yours since this is a 4GB card that you have it would be worth getting anoter 4GB 770 for SLI if your PSU supports this? ...this would be a much better reason to upgrade to a new motherboard IMHO.

Well I have some questions for the graphics card but ill take that to the GPU section. So there wouldn't really be any advantage to going to a better mobo? I was mainly thinking about fan ports and the sound card, now that I say it wouldnt really be worth it unless I was able to get full price.

for fans you could always use these fan splitters they are worth like 3$ each and you can use as many as you want to hook up as much as 5 PWM fans per headers...

Motherboard don't affect performance so the price for a premium motherboard is VERY hard to justify these days IMHO...mid-range and lower end boards have got so much better now they offer all the features one might want at a much more interesting price...and the one you have is pretty good in that regards IMHO...a good quality soundcard if required is what i would add to it...if you plan on running dual 770's then you'd need a better board that supports SLI...this one doesnt.

Just giving the generalization of what each chip does. Obviously they both do everything but intel out performs in the gaming area and amd in the rendering.

That's debatable I think. ;)

That's debatable I think. ;)

lets just say the single-threaded extra gaming performance of the i5 far outweight the slightly better multi-threaded performance of the FX...for a workstation i pick the FX, for a gaming rig i pick the i5, for a machine that would do both: core i5.
