Would a display port work just as well as say, DVI Dual Link?

No it's not Dual Link DVI supports 144Hz

I believe only DP will work.  I believe the max for DVI Dual Link is 120HZ, 1080P.

Nope, my VG248QE is running at 144hz using dual link DVI and it was the cable included in the box.

This sounds about right. I've got the same monitor.

DisplayPort and Dual-Link DVI will both work fine, HDMI can be used too but it's a little more involved a process.

Dual Link DVI only supports up to 120hz. Use a displayport cable and call it a day.

Dual-Link DVI definitely supports 144Hz. Not only do many people here use it personally, but even ASUS's VG248QE product page states:

"To activate 144Hz function (in 2D mode), both DisplayPort (or Dual-link DVI) and a selected graphics card with the latest driver are required."
