Hello (I know this is home theater topic, but there was no car audio topic I could post in lol), I'm planning to buy the Kicker Solo-Baric L7 15 inch for my car, there are two versions of it 2x2ohm or 2x4ohm which one of them should I buy and what amp would you recomend with it? And would I need to upgrade to a second battery (the one I have now is a brand new Varta Silver Dynamic AGM 70Ah, 12v battery)?

Thanks :)

Now this post is right up my alley! :D If it is Car Audio, Me & my Bro know it all! You should go with a Dual 2ohm sub. and a Dual 4ohm if you get two subs. Go with an Amp that is 1ohm stable. Now for an amp for that Kicker Solo-Baric S15L72 (11S15L72) that comes with a Free $100 Sonic Electronix Gift Card for that Amp!!

Click here for 500w~1k mono 1-ohm amps & 1k~1.5k amps, its okay to run higher watts as long as there is not a lot of Sine Wave like notes. I have a 2.4K amp on a 1.8k RMS Sub & recones standing by but never used them yet Knock on wood. Once you go higher then 1,000w RMS you should start looking into higher output alternators like DC Power or Mechman Alternators to supply the Juice needed to output the power advertised on the Amp. Power don't come from nowhere, you not going to run 2 GTX 980's on a 400w PSU right?

Good Amp Brands: (Based on what's available on SonicElectronix)

Alpine
DC Audio
Infinity
Clarion
JBL
JL Audio
Kicker
Massive Audio
MTX
Orion
Polk Audio
Rockford Fosgate
Skar Audio
Soundstream
Image Dynamics

DO NOT go with any of these bad brands:

Boss
Dual
Jensen
Planet Audio (AKA Boss)
Power Acoustik
PowerBass
Pyle
Pyramid
SPL

Brands that are either good or bad. (Questionable brands)

American Bass
Audiopipe
Autotek
Crunch
Hifonics
Kenwood
MB Quart
NVX Audio
Earthquake
Hitron
Pioneer
Lanzar
JVC
Precision Power
RE Audio
Bazooka
Sony

This is how you wire the subwoofer up to an Amplifier.

I'd maybe go with this one here, Massive Audio N3 nice small amp, You can still run it on your stock alternator, the power is there if you get a HO Alternator!

Rockford Fosgate Power T1000-1bdCP
Rockford Fosgate R1200-1D

DO NOT go with any of these bad brands:

Boss
Dual
Jensen

And why is this? I've used Boss, Dual, and Jensen products in the past and have had zero issues with them. Would not be surprised if power isn't as stickered, but that's not to say that they don't work properly.

These days class-D is all the rage so that's what I'd go with. I'd go with the 2x2, and what amp would depend on how much you're looking to spend on one.

You can go with Boss Dual but on cheap subs. Boss, Dual, and Jensen products is not for a $200+ sub in his case. Maybe even a $100+ sub xD You can get a Boss amp & it will work, could work for a long time, I would not will not go that way Sam I AM. It is not clean power, it might catch fire & Dirty power is what breaks subs. You can have clean power your ears & subs are just happy.

Go to your Car Audio shop to do Gain Matching too, highly recommended. I can maybe get it done for free at the place I go to.

Thanks mate! I'm actually really unsure if I should go all out with this and just buy the JL 13w7AE and the JL HD1200/1 amp.

Excellent choice! Just get good trusted OFC wire. Custom made enclosure from a good builder in Norway. Any enclosure will work. But the right enclosure is everything to JL & other high end subs!

For sound quality, I'd go with 2x4 ohm to keep DF high (given the same amp specs). For max output, I'd go with 2x2 ohm if the amplifier is 1 ohm stable.

Your battery should be fine as long as your charging system and wiring are adequate. As previously mentioned, an alternator upgrade and big 3 wiring usually help. You can look at an extra battery or capacitor later on if you get bothered by light dimming.

As for amps, try to find a CEA-2006 rated one (they typically have more realistic power ratings). If you want to get the most out of the sub in nearly all conditions, then maybe get an amp that is rated with low distortion for 1500W or higher (at 2 ohms for 2x4 or at 1 ohm for 2x2). Excursion can be a problem with these subs at high volumes though, so you might need to run a fairly high infrasonic filter (as suited to your enclosure design).
