I am having an issue with my Evga 970 ftw that I got yesterday. I was playing BF4 on ultra for about 10 minutes running at 110-140 fps and then had to do something else for a bit. So I closed the game and when I came back and relaunched the game I could only get 30 fps if I was lucky on medium settings. I launched msi afterburner to look at what the card was doing whilst running some benchmarks. The fps I was getting was good except when I started the physx 3 fluids. The fps would start at 96 ish and hold for about 5 seconds and then start to drop and after 20 seconds I was running at 27 fps. During the benchmarks the GPU power usage starts to climb and gets to 70% and drops down to 50% and the same happens with the GPU usage, goes up to 100% and then drops down to 15% and all the time the GPU does not go above 45c. All the other benchmarks I did worked fine and the card performed as expected. On the upside no coil noise. I am have rolled back my nvidia driver and done a clean install. It has not helped. The card performs beautifully on other games and I am not sure what to do.

Do you have physx in the driver set to run on your cpu instead of your 970?

In nvidia control panel i have the physx set to auto and below that it says Geforce gtx 970. In my BIOS I have im Intel disabled because I thought that the cpu could be the problem. How do I check if the card is in 2D mode?

To check if it's stuck in 2D mode, check the clocks and post them here.

The clocks speed of my GPU?

Yes, as we doubt it a cpu clock issue.

So you didn't mess with precision x or anything right? That's just the "base" clock. Run a benchmark and check cpu usage just to be sure.

Reinstall your drivers.

Only thing I have changed with precision x is i created a custom fan curve because i did not like the fans not spinning. I have reinstalled my drivers 3 times and still no change. The cpu is fine. I reinstalled my old 670 as I needed to do some some work for I client (Using AfterEffects and Premiere and rendering videos for 5 hours last night)  and I did not want the 970 messing it up so I would need to redo it all and the cpu worked like normal. \\\\\the cpu was pinned at 100% while I was rendering and did not exceed 78 degrees Celsius.

Have you tried playing other titles?

Other titles run as I would expect with no problems along with other benchmarks other than the the physx 3 fluids in msi kombuster 3.0. a few of the games I have tried are NFS shift 2, Alice: the madness returns and the vanishing of ethan carter and they all ran at 60 fps (v-sync on)

Problem solved. It was an issue with the Physx engine I did a clean install of all the drivers but this time I clear the drivers first using DDU while in safemode and then did a custom installation and deselect all but the main display driver and check Perform Clean Install. Then i installed the rest of the drivers separately :)
