With the coming of new games, it is time for me to work on my gear. My current graphics card is a pretty heavily overclocked R9 280. (The XFX double Dissipation edition)

http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16814150678

I was playing Far Cry 2 and similar aged game, and I was more then adequate FPS (80/90+) on highest settings. However, I bought the newest Far Cry, and on tweaked (turning of shadowing and such) medium, I can barely play it. So I need to upgrade, especially with the new titles coming out requiring crazy cpu power, and I have a decent budget ($1k) so my question is this.

Do I:

A: buy another XFX r9 280 and crossfire

Or

B: a whole new rig.

My motherboard really doesn't have open PCI slots for more then 2 graphics cards open.

Thanks as always! You guys are great!

If you only need to upgrade your cpu+gpu then you can get a 4790k with a 980 that should keep you happy for a long time. With the rest of the money you can get a good cpu cooler for overclocking the cpu.

Mainboard:ROG-STRIX-B360-G-GAMING/Cpu:I5 8400 /Gpu: Galax RTX 2070 /Ram: Corsair Vengeance 16 GB DDR4/ Storage:1TB HDD 2 Corsair SSD PSU : Corsair 550W/Cooling: Silverstone Air Cooler/ / Case : Corsair/Keyboard:Razer Chroma TKL/Mouse:Mionix Castor+Steelseries Qck Mass/Headphone:V Moda M100

I think you should get a Gtx 980 or 780ti beacause not all games support multi gpu's and in order to be able to play at max settings you need a lot of gpu power and only these 2 cards have the horsepower to tackle any game at max sattings @ 60fps

Far cry 4 has terrible optimization for amd gpu so that isn't your 280 fault. If you have 1k to spend on gpu get 2 980 that will be more the enough to max out farcry 4 will a smooth framerate

You say your 280 is heavily overclocked, maybe you are getting thermal throttling? You should be fine with a 280 and your CPU isn't bottlenecking.

Thank you everyone for your time. On the concept of thermal throttling, the highest I EVER got (and this was not even gaming, this was in rendering) was around 83*C, so nothing too high. I should not, i live in the mountains with very cool ambient temperatures, and I have pretty aggressive fans, so my temperatures are usually pretty fantastic.

It NEVER even occurred to me that buying an AMD GPU compared to a similarly priced Nvidia could affect performance much. I appreciate your time, before I go and spend this much money (and I know this has potential to start an argument), does going with AMD here verses Nvidia really matter that much? Thanks again!

The recent amd driver should have fix the issues with farcry 4 already so maybe you should check on that first. For gpu shopping it is always better to go for performance then to go for brand and as of right now nvidia have the upper hand with their recent 900 series of card.
