I have a desktop running Windows XP Home Edition (SP3) and I recently purchased a laptop with WIndows 7 Home Premium for my mother.

I game so id be better off with the Windows 7 for DX11 and what not and she prefers windows xp anyway. Do you think microsoft will allow me to swap the OS'.

Also im not entirely sure how id do it yet as there was no windoiws 7 disk with the laptop the recovery is on a partition. So im thinking the only way would be to transfer all the recovery files to a disk or USB stick then install it on the desktop from the disk/usb.

Then i could install xp on the laptop from the disk I have.

your help is appreciated

thanks

Why doesn't she like Windows 7? It's identical to Windows XP in terms of layout.
If she freaks out because the background has changed, then you should look into why a background change freaks her out. My guess is that she doesn't understand computers, and see it more as a fragile magic box. You should fix that by teaching her.

Beside, for security reason she should NOT be using XP at all. Chicken wire has less holes than the number of security holes in Windows XP. Malware or virus can easily convert the most limited account you can create into full Administrator, even under a domain layout. Where I work as IT for a school, we had our network compromised several times because we were running XP.. that was 2.5 years ago. We switch to Win7 64-bit everywhere. Since then based on our reports, virus infection per school year, drop down to 0, compared to 14, a number that was increasing every year. We also notice a nice drop in power utility, as Windows 7 power management system introduced in Vista, allowed the computer to reduce the power consumption at idle or light usage, by under-clocking components, and have our computer go under sleep without issue on long period of time idle.

And like Theblasphemouscoffee, said, you can't transfer OEM licenses.

And why are you running on a legacy OS is beyond me:

-> Students where their school or school department is register to MSNDAA or now renamed to DreamSpark, can have Windows Vista, 7 , and 8 for free, among a long list of Microsoft software for free.

-> You have Student discounts on the latest version of Windows on Microsoft Store online.

-> Windows 7 was 60% off for Home Premium, and 50% off for Business at release

-> Windows 8 Pro was 40$ + Media Center Pack was free for 4 month at release.
