Slim Gaming Laptop

SNIP

I am well aware of the downsides of slim and light and I am willing to live with all the cons it brings

I am on my 4th heavy gaming laptop (currently the m18x) and I am sick of it, I have a clevo w110er 11.6" gaming laptop and even though it gets hot and lacks performance its the machine I take with me when I go out and about

One of thje main things I want it for is photo and video editing (was origionally wanting a 15" retina pro.. still might) but I would love the ability to game still

I want something macbook sized, but with a better GPU,

cant buy from xotic as they are not in the UK, I can buy clevo stuff from PCspecialist though

BUT I am happy to pay for better quality machines too, like going for an MSI, Asus, Apple etc- the price is not a problem

I only really expect 2-3 years from it, as thats what my current machines get me

Well macbook thinness isn't really practical if you want the power out of it. You could also check scanUK and mySN.co.uk for clevos if you want them. The P650SG could use a 3K screen, I know that for sure, if that's what you're worried about. If that's too thick for you though... I don't know what to say.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

The macbook would be perfect if it had a better GPU, the 750m is dated, maybe if it had a 965m or something it would sway me

Not massively interested in a 3k display, windows scaling is rubbish and gaming is impossible at that res, 1080p  would be fine for a windwos laptop (though I know most high end ones are going 3k)

Something like the razer blade would be almost perfect but I wish it had a 960/970m in, and well its not even available in the UK

Honestly its a pretty hard decision

Main contenders MSI GS60, GB P35x, Aorus X3 Plus, 15" retina pro

You're a different person than me then. I can't stand a machine that won't work as the parts are designed. Not even for thinness/lightness.

Well what I want is impossible so i have to sacrifice something, and I NEED to sacrifice weight, when you are lugging around heavy camera equiptment, tripods etc, carrying round an extra 2kg of laptop is a lot

I need to shed weight everywhere possible, I am using a Sony A7 to make my camera smaller and using lighter E mount lenses... that is all to waste if I take my Alienware m18x around, as it weighs as much as a small child

So why not get a ULV ultrabook and leave heavy editing for home?

Because I need to edit on the move, maybe I am in a different country for a few weeks, or have to edit on location for a client

or because I want to fire up Crysis 3

I basically want an ultrabook with a good graphics card, sure there are plenty with mid range ones, but price is not an issue so I may aswell get something high end

So basically you want something that doesn't really exist. Well, tech like that might well never exist. At least not with the current tech we have. Maybe when people begin using vacuum semiconductors again it might work. Maxwell could probably handle in thin books; it IS indeed cool. But haswell is the hottest chip intel's produced in about 8 years. Broadwell... probably is not much better. If it is, then maybe your dream book will appear. But that's not for a while again.

Of course it exists, I know of about 5 or 6 models that are about a 90% fit for what I want but its impossible to get hands on experience with them

I think the MSI GS60 is the closest to a 15" macbook retina size but with a 970m, shame its not like 14"..

Also the gigabyte px35 with 980m fits it too (though lower build quality and some other issues are a big negative)

Obviously nothing like a gaming macbook air exists - that WOULD be my dream, but again I am not delusional, we do not have that technology yet,

but picking between the few 13-15" thin gaming laptops is hard

well you want the GS60 and P35x, but you think the P650SE/P650SG is too large/heavy. The GS60 throttles on CPU and the gigabyte cut out internals for the cooling to fit, and had various issues which I think resulted in some recalls.

Remember, I'm considering fully working (no throttle, works as designed, doesn't overheat) when talking about these things.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Actually looking again the P650 is ok, its a little thicker and heavier, but is acceptable (ish), not sure of its looks though, its solid but not particularly mind blowing

EDIT: the review mentions that the PSU is not powerful enough to drive the laptop...

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Clevo-P651SE-Schenker-XMG-P505-Barebones-Notebook-Review.127978.0.html

Though I can get a 3k panel, i7 and 980m for £1500 which is damn affordable

The GS60 throttles but only in extreme circumstances of FULL CPU and GPU load and even then it doenst effect frame rates THAT badly (not perfect, nothing is)

The P650SG's PSU is only an issue if you OC the GPU as far as I know. Maxwell cards are pretty good. Nobody on NBR complained about the PSU being inefficient. I wish I could just link you to the owner's lounge where you could ask questions but the forum is still down. Of course, fully stressing the notebook might draw more than usual from the machine, such as my CPU pulling a full 80W (at stock with an undervolt) in linpack. Normally it does not even crack 42W. You can, if you're willing to do some elbow grease, buy the 230W/240W adapters from the 17" models and modify them (if modification is needed). Good luck! I was wondering why the P650SG was too large, lol. It's barely thicker than the gigabyte. That's why I felt you were asking way too much.

Also, the GS60 throttles under heavy CPU load due to temps.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

When you originally asked I was thinking of a different model, the 650 is not too thick, but it is a bit ugly and the build is not that impressive considering I am spending £1500 - £2000

Well it's definitely a solid build. Clevo makes business-oriented laptops first though. It's not flashy, but it's solid. However it is indeed cheap, and you can get an IPS screen on it for your photoshop etc, so I think that should be good.

The W110ERs are in a different league from the P650SG and my P370SM3 though. While the W-series is not bad by any means, I wouldn't consider it alongside the P series in comparisons.
