So, refurbished power supplies, are they safer than normal units (because someone has tested each one for problems) or are they less reliable because they have been broken before? (or just returned to the shop)

I ask this because I have a very strict budget for my new PC (http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/wzGyZL) and I need a power supply, the best one I can find within my limit of £55 for a PSU is this: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-corsair-cx750m-hybrid-modular-80-plus-bronze-1x140mm-atx-psu

I am unsure weather to take the plunge and buy a refurbished unit or try and search somewhere like ebay for a new one.

Any help is appreciated :)

No need for such a large psu. A decent 550w is already plenty: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-100b10600kr

You sure? What about with mild overclocking on both the CPU and GPU?

It's plenty for oc'ing.

The MSI Lightning R9 290X is a pretty power hungry card. You need 3 pci-e connectors for it (2 x 8 pin and 1 x 6 pin).

I would get something like this XFX 650W for £61. It is much better than a Corsair CX.

Any particular reason why you wouldn't?

You usually get less warranty (I think) on a refurb unit. They should be as good as a new unit, as they will have had components replaced.

The Corsair CX isn't that good to start with though. It is the bottom end of Corsair's range.

The XFX one I linked is good. It is made by Seasonic who are one of the best. I have the 750W version in my pc.
