Hi!

I just started a thread on a PC building project, and have a question about storage. How big is the actual real life difference between SSDs?

Here in Norway, a 120GB SSD is about 1/10-1/12 of the total budget of the PC. Is it worth it to buy the "best performing one" or justgo for something in the middle and spend the money elsewhere?

These days, the cheapest and best rated is almost as good as an expensive one.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

At the moment, if you're on a budget the only drive I would buy is the Samsung 840 EVO. They're really cheap now that 850 EVO's are out and they're excellent well performing drives.

As for the actual difference, everyone in my house notices the difference between a cheap Kingston V300 and a 840 EVO for example. Once you get something like the 840 EVO if you go higher the difference isn't nearly as noticeable.

I personally do some music production, have 10s of programs launching with Windows and always hit my system drive very hard, so I do notice quite a big difference going from mid range (840 EVO) to high end like the 850 Pro, but that's only noticeable if you really hit the drive hard like I do and are expecting no slow downs.

Thank you for so many quick answers! At least I know I'm staying away from the higher prices SSDs, but as dumb as it might sound, the site I'm going to buy from does not have te 840 EVO. I guess, they've been phased out after the launch of the 850s. The PC is not going to do much else than gaming and easy video editing, and as bartek said, not a whole lot of programs are going to run at the same time. Any good alternatives for the 840 EVO in the mid range, or should I just go for something like the suggested Crucial MX100. It costs around 70 % of the 850 EVO with equal capacity. What I saw, was it's "low" write speed. Is that going to be a problem considering the video editing?

To be honest, you probably aren't going to notice the write speed that much, as for video editing, most of that is done in RAM and the data drive you write the video too.

With the 256GB version, I have not noticed the difference between this and an Kingston V300 (Pre-bait and switch when they were still good) which claimed read & write of upto 500mb/s.

Genuinely your choice though, bang for the buck is my vote.

And Crucial mx100 it is! Thank you for your help!

If you have not yet gone to bed (a weird statement since you probably live all over the world) would you mind giving me tips on an HDD as well?

Im strongly considering the seagate barracuda 2TB. Very little difference in price compared to 1TB, and video eats up a lot. Is this the better option compared to something like the WD blue 2TB?

Crucial MX100 series, cheap but fast and reliable so far

According to an article on Tom's Hardware, the best "budget" SSD for December 2014 is the Crucial MX100 256GB & 512GB versions (article link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-recommendation-benchmark,3269.html )

I have a Crucial MX100 512GB in my laptop and can assure you it's not a slow drive at all - recommended.

I'm a Western Digital fan and would buy the Caviar Blue 2TB instead of the Seagate, but that's a personal preferance.

CPU: i7 4790K @ 4.7GHz | Mobo: MSI Z97 MPower Max AC | RAM: 16GB Kingston HyperX Beast 2400MHz | GPU: MSI GTX980 Gaming 4G TwinFrozr V | Case: NZXT Switch 810 SE | Cooler: Corsair H105 Hydro |

SSD: Samsung 850 Pro 512GB | Storage: WD Caviar Black 3TB | Displays: Samsung P2450 & Samsung 2232GW | Keyboard: Tesoro Colada G3NL Black Aluminum (Cherry MX Brown)

Thank you for the article. Will consider it, but it really depends on whether or not my friend feels the need for 250GB.

HDD wise it sounds like there is no real difference and that matches well with what I read about a year ago when buying my last drive. Several option to choose fro at least, that's nice!

You do know that there is no such thing as a WD 2tb Blue? For cost effective space the only one is the 'cuda 2tb. WD's offerings are either too slow (Green), or too expensive (Black) to the Seagate. As for the MX100, you won't regret it. Buy the 256gb for the cheapest you can find it and enjoy.

Sir William of Orange: Corsair 230T - Rebel Orange, 4690K, GA-97X SOC, 16gb Dom Plats 1866C9,  2 MX100 256gb, Seagate 2tb Desktop, EVGA Supernova 750-G2, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3, DK 9008 keyboard, Pioneer BR drive. Yeah, on board graphics - deal with it!
