Hey all,

First off, tried searching but couldnt find a search button...  Not sure if retard or search button hidden.

Anywho, decided i'd start a thread and maybe some questions I have might just get answered along the way.

I'm looking in the next month or so to build an X99 based workstation for work and a little play.

I do quite a bit of 3d modelling using Solidworks and i also program CNC Machinery too.

I'm based in QLD, Australia
Budget will end up being around $2000-2500 depending on what deals i can get.

Also, my original plan was to build this into a desk as the bottom drawer so its tidy, but if i can't get it to work i might just rack mount it.

The Rig:
Case: Antec 4U22ATX (Already have)
CPU:  Intel i7 5820k (Possibly 5930k pending video card/cards)

CPU Cooler: Corsair H80i Push/Pull
Motherboard:  Asrock Fatal1ty X99 Professional (or possibly Formula)
Memory:  16GB of ADATA DDR4
Storage:  Single M.2 SSD onboard (250GB will do but 500GB would be nice)

Storage:  Icydock 4x Hotswap Bay (Came with 2nd hand case)

Storage (Optional): 2nd M.2 SSD onboard

Storage (Optional): 2x1TB HDDs in Raid1 for bulk storage
Video Card:  NVIDIA Quadro K2200 4GB
Video Card (Optional): NVIDIA GeForce GTX750 Ti 2GB
Power Supply: Corsair 750watt HXi Platnium
Optical Drive: LG (Have one)
Operating System:  Windows 8.1
Monitor: 3x24" 1920x1200 Dell (Buying second hand 3 for about $350) :D

Mouse, Keyboard, Speakers and all that crap isnt that expensive so i'm not concerned about that here.

OK.
So now you have the rundown of what i'm looking at and what its being used for, question time...

1) Running a Quadro and Geforce on the same board... I know it has been done but i don't know to what degree of success.
I'm not a huge gamer so won't be playing hours of anything on there. At most i might play some GTA. But with a triple moniter setup it might spur me to get some more graphics heavy titles.

I know if you're going to SLI cards they need to be identical but what about non SLI capable cards?
Do they need to be the same?
I included the quadro K2200 and GeForce GTX750Ti because they're almost identical... Same Maxwell GPU, Same CUDA Core counts, etc.

Will having a 2nd "gaming" card actually help if i were to game a little bit?

Final Thoughts:

This whole system might be a little bit overkill for right now but i've never really had a desktop workstation and i always say "if its worth doing, its worth overdoing!"
Living out of my i7 laptop has been good thus far, but i'm starting to find the limits.

Thanks for spending the time reading through my evil plan of world domination.... i mean pc build...
Any comments, ideas, thoughts, etc. would be great.
Cheers.
Steve.

I don't know why you are going with low end workstation card and budget gaming card. So build with amd FirePro W7100 gaming would be like you are using r9 280-285. Or go with quadro K4200

Thus far i've been using my laptop and am only just starting to feel held back a little bit..

Specs:

Core i7 Q720M @ 1.6Ghz

8GB Ram

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1GB Graphics

1TB HDD

So i really don't need $700-$800+ worth of graphics power right now if a 1GB 'gaming' card is just starting to hold me back.. ;)

In 6-8 years or however long it takes for me to find the limits of the new system, I can spend more cash on it if i need it.

I was originally planning on a K2000 (and it would probably do the job just fine... I could possibly even get away with the NVS 510 or K620)

K2200... to me seems like the best value for money as far as i can see and leaves me plenty of space to grow (Please, inform me if i'm wrong)

Im aware that if i put the K2200 + GTX 750Ti I'll be at the $800 mark anyway but the question still stands....

Do i need a gaming card or can i get away with a $600 workstation card?

Cheers for the quick response. B)

Doing even more reasearch on the Quadro K2200 vs Geforce GTX 750Ti and I think i've come to the conclusion that spending an extra $200 on a "gaming" card probably isnt gonna help that much anyway..

Found some Firestrike benchmarks just to get some sort of idea:
Quadro:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/nvidia-quadro-k5200-k4200-k2200_10.html

Geforce (and compareable ATI offerings):

http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/6085/nvidia-geforce-gtx-750-ti-2gb-reference-card-video-card-review/index5.html

Now, i know this won't be a real world scenario and if i run them together I might get a little more processing power and more FPS

So what do the intelligent ones have to say on this?
Are 2 cards better than 1?

Anymore thoughts would be great too.
Thanks in advance.
