Hey guys,

I have found the Linus Tech Tips on YouTube and decided to come check out this site.

I was hoping I could get some build suggestions on a new rig I need. My current one decided to give up after 7 years of service.

I need to get a build going for a PC that can be used primarily for 3D Modeling/Rendering as well a decent gaming machine and able to support Dual Monitors. I would like room for upgrades later down the line if at all possible so I can try to keep it going for another 7 or so years

I am juggling the ideas of 4k vs. 1080p, SLI vs Single GPU, and DDR3 vs DDR4 for my purposes.

Looking at a budget of ~2.5k at most. I do plan on keeping 1 of my current monitors, my keyboard, mouse and stereo system for the next system.

Think you guys could help me out with this?

Going to ask a few question to fine tune the system I have here:

- Need a lot of storage or do you already have something like a NAS ready?

- Prefer Dual GPU now or do not mind saving up for another down the road?

- OS/Peripherals?

- Do I need to include a monitor and if so: IPS or TN and what resolution?

@Dinmak

Edit: Also assuming it's USD

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

Hey, thanks for the reply

- Need a lot of storage or do you already have something like a NAS ready?

>I already have a couple of storage hard-drives that I can use. Although it does bring up the question on if you would recommend a new SSD for my boot up drive since both of my current drives not SSD.

- Prefer Dual GPU now or do not mind saving up for another down the road?

>I wouldn't mind saving up for one later down the road if a single GPU

- OS/Peripherals?

>Would like to run Windows. I am currently running off of Vista (ya I know). But I have also heard that Windows 8 is horrid for gamers and have been recommended to stick to Windows 7. Any thoughts on that? Peripheral wise I don't have anything too fancy outside of the Yamaha 5.1 Surround sound, but having it actually go from Stereo to Surround is not entirely that important.

- Do I need to include a monitor and if so: IPS or TN and what resolution?

>I would like to have the monitor included in the price. And from what I can gather, IPS would be better at displaying colors if I am right. Would like to go down the route with a better color display for the design work.

Oh and yes, it is in USD

So I have been looking around. Any thoughts on this kind of set up?

MOTHERBOARD: ASUS RAMPAGE V EXTREME LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard
CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W Desktop Processor BX80648I75820K
MEMORY: CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4-24000)
CPU COOLING: DEEPCOOL Gamer Storm CAPTAIN 240 CPU Liquid Cooler AIO Water Cooling Ceramic Bearing Pump Visual Liquid Flow with Dual120mm FDB PWM Fan Rubber Coating Deep Silent Support LGA 2011-v3
GPU: MSI GTX 980 GAMING 4G GeForce GTX 980 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16
POWER SUPPLY: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 220-G2-0850-XR 850W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Power Supply Intel 4th Gen CPU Compatible
SSD: SanDisk Extreme Pro SDSSDXPS-240G-G25 2.5" 240GB SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit
DVD-DRIVE: ASUS Black 18X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA DVD-ROM Drive
DVD-BURNER: ASUS 24X DVD Burner
CASE: Rosewill ARMOR-EVO Gaming E-ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
MONITOR: Dell S2740L Black 27" 7ms (GTG) IPS-Panel HDMI Widescreen

Looking more in depth showed me that 4k monitors are not quiet within my price bracket, so 1080p IPS.
I am still confused on the SSD and making sure that would be a suitable OS drive. Also kind of just hoping that power supply will suffice. Says that it is SLI ready which I do plan to upgrade to later and it has a higher power rating than was required by the GPU (GPU required 500w).

Any other thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
