I want a small server somewhere in my house where I can store all my music, movies and game ISO's. i don't want it to be inside my case because more than one PC has to be able to access it and I don't want it causing problems with my PC or when my PC is off everything screws up. I do run Windows 7 and have never had networked storage before. Where do i start?

Heya,

You could go by it 3 ways. If your router has a usb port with the ability to add an external HDD to it and use it to share the data on the HDD on the network. The second option could be to buy yourself a small NAS enclosure with a couple of HDDs. You can then set up a RAID1 for back up protection but it will be a lot more pricey.

The third option can be, to use your personal machine as a "24/7 machine always online" where you can share specific folders/hard drives on the network where people can access your shared folders/HDD on the network. You can set a username and password to access the share files for extra security. This is the scenario I use since my computer is on all the time and everyone on the network can access my films/tv shows and family pictures using a username and password to access them from any computer or mobile device  ^_^

You should consider something like Google Drive. It'll cost less and you'll be able to access the files anywhere as long as you have internet access.

With a NAS you can access it anywhere providing you port forward the FTP protocol of your WAN IP address with the port number you assign

Either get or build a NAS.

Synology has some great products, definatly go for it, if you want something hassle free.
