so i have never done any RAID before and my question is can i use 2 different drives as long as they are the same spec?

drive brand does not matter at all, but getting 2 drives as similar as possible is always best

Hey OfficialJsP,

Theoretically you can use any two drives in RAID. Size and speed will be limited to the slowest drive in the array and the smallest drive in the array. You would probably experience problems if there are differences in the drives' firmware. That's why it is recommended to use simmilar or identical drives. It is also recommended to use NAS/RAID class drives to avoid compatibility issues and dropouts of the array (these drives have additional features that enable them to work smoother and more safely in RAID environment).

I have to disagree a bit with my fellow captain. As @ShadowCaptain mentioned, the brand itself does not matter at all when it comes to compatibility, but each manufacturer has their own firmware on the drives and this can sometimes cause problems when two different drives work together.

Happy New Year!
