Does a MSI gtx 970 support 2560x1080 60HZ over HDMI?

I been reading some reviews of a 2560x1080 monitor which I just bought and allot say u need the DVI to run at full res 60hz (I am assuming display port will also do fine despite the fact they didn't mention it)

 

I read one review that said depending on your GPU it might be able to do it through HDMI is this true? I have a MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G it says on MSI's website it can do Max Resolution: 4096x2160 @24 Hz on HDMI (1.4a) (also I am pretty sure the monitor doesn't support HDMI 2.0) Does this mean at can run a the full res at 60hz?

I think it [HDMI 1.4] can only do up to 1920x1200 60Hz but not 100% sure.

Hdmi does not do 21:9 because it sucks.

HDMI could do 1440p @ 60Hz I'm sure. I know 1200p isn't the limit for it. Not sure about 2560 x 1600 @ 60Hz though.

I believe it can do that resolution, since it is capable of 2560 x 1440 @ 60Hz, and 2560 x 1080 @ 60Hz is less. I think the limit for HDMI 1.4a is somewhere along the lines of 2880 x 1620 @ 60Hz, or so, but I am not sure. But by the time you reach 4K it's 30Hz (or 4096 variant of 4K which is 24Hz). 

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

970 and 980 have HDMI 2.0

HDMI 2.0 will support 2560x1080 @ 60Hz. Unless using mac where you would have to contact them. Monitor needs to be HDMI 2.0 as well.

I advise you use Displayport or DVI-D Dual link.

I stand "I don't fucking know" and I am diving out of this conversation because the only second monitor I have is some 1360 x 768 sharp TV so I can't even check. MEOW.

While that is true at this time. HDMI 2.0 does support it. Honestly idk why anyone would use HDMI on a monitor unless it was a console. I did let op know that monitor has to be HDMI 2.0. Also I have read a lot of posts of people using it with HDMI 1.4 @ 2560x1080 60Hz. My best advise is to try it and see if it works. The company put HDMI on the monitor for a reason.

Seriously dont know why anyone would buy a 4k tv or monitor that does not have HDMI 2.0. Why would you buy a 21:9 monitor to only do 16:9? What a waste of money. Its best if op try HDMI and then let us know if it will do 21:9. A lot of posts I read say it will work but HDMI 2.0 will do it.

Yup, but op was asking about HDMI so I'm assuming he would use it on a 4k as well. Most people I know don't even know what displayport is. Displayport ftw

you can use pretty much any resolution up to 1440p since HDMI 1.3

also 21:9 resolutions.

this depends on the monitor though.

ok, it isn't actually that simple with hdmi.

and you are in fact partially right. The HDMI standard so far didn't officialy include the video timings for 21:9 formats

With HDMI 2.0 they added some (e.g. 3440x1440 i.e. Linus favorite LG monitor is still not included).

however HDMI 1.3 upwards actually also supports 21:9 resolutions like 2560x1080, but you have to 'tell' your gpu to actually output that 'strange' resolution which can easily be done.

It is a popular myth, that HDMI doesn't support any resolutions higher than 1080p (e.g. supporting those popular 27 2560x1440 monitors). Even Linus sometimes mentioned this myth as a reason why he dislikes HDMI.

So the monitor came... yes HDMI was able to push 2560x1080 60HZ
