ddr3 is not nearly as risky as ddr2 was and ddr2 worked fine most of the time too, so very slim chances that something might go wrong, if you order online you can always return if it does not work so I wouldn't worry so much.

They work as 8gb  of memory, and the mother is gonna recognize 8gb of ddr3, the point is, if you want to use them in dual channel o some technology for better performance, you should save some money for a pack of memory, manufacturers sell those just in pack for that purpose
